Description Shashwat 2009-05-14 10:56:14 UTC
Version: 4.2.2 (using KDE 4.2.2)
OS: Linux
Installed from: Mandriva RPMs

Been loving KDE lately .. I am using Mandriva 2009.1 Spring .. The kwin effect acting very wierdly with ATI card I have i.e. HD 3300. The card is fully supported by ATI fglrx linux driver ..

Initially I had various problem using Kwin.. Enabling it makes computer goes black and after sometime desktop restore with some position and windows decoration still black.. Here you can watch the video http://www.mediafire.com/?mmxjmydy3wx

Today somehow it was working fine though video playback suck with it ! https://qa.mandriva.com/show_bug.cgi?id=49733

I thought of seeing my AMD card configuration through ATI Control Center .. Launching it crashed the whole desktop.. I get Black screen again which restore to desktop with black in windows decoration and in some other parts. It keep on gng . I had to restart the system and later on disable the effetcs from Safe boot mode !

Please suggest a work around or fix the problem. I really want to use Kwin composite effetcs :)

But this darned ATI card wont let me do :(

Attaching the Xsessions error file.. Also please note that enabling direct rendering didn't work . It gets deselected automatically :(
Regards

Looks to me like a driver problem...

Do you receive a crash dialog or is it just that the desktop becomes black?

When the desktop becomes black, does alt+shift+f12 restore the desktop? If yes what happens if you use the combination again (which is resume compositing)?

video link is 404

the attachment (xsession errors) contains few interesting (compared to the one you provided mandriva, sniff ;-P )
-> https://qa.mandriva.com/attachment.cgi?id=13880
MAAAANY BadPixmap's

you can also try the xrender backend (though it has limited functionality)

the xorg log you provided (SNIFF) them (sniff...) suggests dri/dri2 are loaded, tried to disable functionality checks?
(w/o direct rendering video playing (any large+fast area updates) won't be much fun ever...)

waiting for answers...

One the desktop went black while enabling Kwin only restart fix it. But if it remained enable even restarting gave some blackouts so only hope fix it..

As I said except opengl nothing worked.. Let me clear. .If I select Xrender it gets automatically reverted to opengl for some reasons..

Sorry don't knw why the video link not working .. I will see if I can record the problem again ..

sorry i cannot make any sense out of this :-(

that's why you should try to "Disable functionality checks"
and even w/ opengl only, there're couple of things to adjust, in particular "Direct Rendering", the "OpenGL mode" and the "Texture Filter"
Comment 7 Shashwat 2009-05-26 16:06:16 UTC
. Again I was about to comment and tried enabling Kwin again.. and the same black out happened.. I checked Dire Rendering, Disbale F Check but nothing happeneed.. I rebooted the system and after reboot there were few blackout but the desktop appears.. Now when I see desktop settings all the enabled options are auto. uncheck..

1. Lemme clear it.. Suppose I enabled Kwin and the system went black. Now I press CTRL+ALT + F1 and rebooted.. Please note I have not disabled Kwin . Now after reboot the Mandriva splash went black now and then and if I am lucky the desktop appears .. But most of the time it remained black so I have to wait for desktop to appear and disable Kwin...

2. As said I checked all the options but they get unchecked automatically.. :(

BTW I don't face such issue with Compiz ! Why so ?

@ #2 : CTRL+ALT+F12 doesn't bring desktop back.. But If get those black problem then it shows a system log type thing listing all the errors and status about the user..

What am I suppose to do, inorder to get back to the desktop and disbale kwin once this shit happens ? ALt +F7 , CTRL+Alt+F1/F12 doesn't do the trick
Comment 8 Martin Flöser 2009-05-26 16:52:20 UTC
Which effects do you have enabled? Could you please paste us a list.

and it's not ctrl+alt+f12 but alt+shift+f12.
Comment 9 Thomas Lübking 2009-05-26 16:57:09 UTC
Just as Martin mentioned: SHIFT+alt+f12
(and don't press "+", just keep all key held together)

SHIFT is the key /above/ ctrl that makes YOUR LETTERS GO UPPERCASE (Ctrl+Alt+F[1-12] changes the VT, did ever since all /Linux/ versions)

> I checked Dire Rendering, Disbale F Check but nothing happeneed..
Did you press "Apply" or "Ok"? These settings trigger heavy changes why "auto applying" would not be very smart.

> I rebooted the system and after reboot there were few blackout but

If you applied the settings before check if you're writing permissions on
~/.kde/share/config/kwinrc
(use e.g. "stat")

> 1. Lemme clear it.. Suppose I enabled Kwin and the system went black. Now I
do you have the blur plugin enabled? once you figured out how to successfully change settings, please disable it in case.

>if I am lucky the desktop appears .. But most of the time it remained black so I
>have to wait for desktop to appear and disable Kwin...
it doesn't appear so you wait for it to appear and disable kwin?
you mean you /reboot/ your box everytime until you happen to be able to see your desktop????
1. SHIFT+alt+F12 will toggle off compositing.
2. if this doesn't help and your distributor isn't a complete **** you can press
CTRL+alt+backspace (that's the key above the enter key on the top right corner of the ALPHANUMERIC block (the large one - below the F[1-12] keys) of your keyboard) to just restart the X11 server (i.e. the entire GUI system, you'll end up with a new KDM dialog)
3. iff your distributor /is/ a jerk (upps) and blocked that, you can use
CTRL+alt+F1 to get a VT, login there and call st. like
"sudo /etc/init.d/kdm restart" (it might be "xdm" rather than "kdm") and more or less do the same as in (2.)

As soon as you figured out how to store settings, disable the "Login" (and possibly "Logout" as well) effect.

If you check "Disable functionality checks" and it (this checkbox) automatically gets unchecked again, sth. in your system is completely broken (i mean really)
if you check it, nothing else should reset as well (...unless you click "Defaults" instead of "Apply" or "Ok"...)
