Description Janet 2009-05-11 01:18:47 UTC
Version: (using KDE 4.2.3)
Installed from: Ubuntu Packages

Maybe it's a silly idea but: how about optional alphabetical register buttons between slider and information panel to quickly jump to files beginning with a specific letter without having to take the hand off the mouse. One click could lead to the first folder beginning with that letter, a second click (or doubleclick) to the first file. And why there? Because I have my "hand" on the scollbar when searching and therefore it would be the shortest way.

you can already use the keyboard to quickly select the first file which begins with that char, isn't it more quick than the mouse?

I guess it will look strange if you have all the letters as a botton.
why not add a search line, where you can type the letters.

For example in the "/" you press "s" it shows only the folders and files beginning with a "s", you can reduce the files shown by a second letter "y" and only "sys" will be shown. This only works if you clicked the search line, so the standard function isnt affected.

I know I can use the keyboard. That's fine and I don't want to give it up - but that's not the point. The point is it's not possible *without* using the keyboard.

Imagine this:

- You are working on two computers. Your left hand is on the keyboard of the one computer and your right hand on the mouse of the second (sounds absurd to you? It's standard for me). So it would be really really faster for me to use the mouse to jump back and forth in the folder.

- You *have* only one hand or can only use one (keyword: accessibility).

- You're writing something with the left while being on the mouse with the right (or vice versa). You're forced to either take one hand of the pen or of the mouse.

- Your mouse is in another place than the keyboard.

And IMHO it would look that peculiar...

Yes, I was just thinking this four years later.

I considered an alpha/num line horizontally.

The problem that arises is that files often bunch up about one or two letters: maybe 22 files begin A, 18 files begin B, but only one file begins J and none begin N.
So it it just shifts the problem.

One could add a little intelligence to split up bigger groups, but it could all turn into bloat.

I quite like the feature that allows me to enter a keyboard letter to move to the start of files beginning with that letter. The problem I've described then arises again.

The problem with a large file is that control of the slider has to be very fine - sometimes in "details" view I'm jigging back & forth missing the file I want each time.
I can use up/down page or arrow, tha gives enough fine control; that works well in combination with the single-start-letter positioning.
Or use the compact view, but that lacks detailed information.

Perhaps the answer to keeping mouse in hand is to stand back from Dolphin & use an on-screen keyboard for the limited positioning feature.

A fine-control slider might also help.
As it happens I loathe the "fingerprint" slider idea; to much poppity & slow, it leaves me waiting if the machine is under load, which might well be when I really need direct access. And some implementations are buggy to the extent of popping up a slide fingerprint, but not letting you onto it to gain control. Very funny :D
Basically, it's a horrid way of doing things, redolent of "mystery meat", something that seems all the fashion nowadays.

Better might be a "continuous belt", with a fine/coarse scale available by right-click.
