Version: (using KDE 4.2.2) OS: Linux Installed from: Ubuntu Packages When using nautilus (default gnome file manager) from kde on (k)ubuntu jaunty opening a text file (the default program is gedit) kills the plasma desktop and replaces it with the gnome desktop - the links that were in my desktop folder are now literally on the desktop ala gnome and the background image has changed to the gnome one
My guess: the GNOME desktop application is starting and it goes above the Plasma desktop.. I don't think it kill plasma actually but just it hides it. If Nautilus launch the full gnome-desktop session, that something that should be addressed on the GNOME side. Please, double check that the process "plasma" still exists. Also you can check that quitting the gnome-desktop application (I don't know which name it has) Plasma should reappear. Thanks
The plasma desktop did not re-appear when I killed nautilus, but did briefly when when I logged out. I'm pretty sure the gnome desktop just took precedence over kde - On logging in again I haven't been able to reproduce the issue. I'm presuming that the problem must have another factor that I haven't pinned down yet rather than being simply dependent on opening a file in gedit from nautilus in kde. I had a lot of problems with gnome window styles overriding my KDE ones in (k)ubunutu 8.10 + kde 4.2.2 but 9.04 + kde 4.2.2 seems much more stable.
When I said you should close the "gnome-desktop application" I meant the application that paints the GNOMe desktop (wallpaper and icons)
Anyways, you have to report this in the GNOME bugtracker, we are not resposible about the actions the GNOME applications do. (or at least you can ask on the forums, may be another people experienced this too and they found some solution) Marking as INVALID as this is not a KDE bug. Thanks
