Description Janet 2009-05-07 20:39:05 UTC
Version: (using KDE 4.2.2)
Installed from: Ubuntu Packages

KDE3's konqueror filemanager had a view mode in which the icons were displayed with the text alonside the icons. IMHO this very "clean" view mode is missing in dolphin. Dolphin does have a column view which opens the files in a second column (which is very nice on a widescreen display in fullscreen mode) but I'd like to see an additional not splitted columns view mode, just like the standard icon view but with the text at the right side of the icons.

You might want to try the Icons View and then go to "Settings->Configure Dolphin...", go to the "View Modes" section, select "Icons" and switch "Arrangement" from "Rows" to "Columns". Maybe that's what you want ;-)

@Janet: I've set this issue to WORKSFORME, please reopen it the configuration that Frank mentioned is not sufficient. Thanks!
Comment 3 Janet 2009-05-08 16:02:54 UTC
Huh, so sorry for bothering you with this - I'm absolutely sure it wasn't there yesterday! Thanks :)

Will it be possible to switch between columns and rows via a button? I'm sure you remember the konqueror view buttons in KDE3 with that little arrow that gave a drop down list for that specific view to customize it.
Comment 4 Peter Penz 2009-05-08 16:14:19 UTC
It is currently not planned that a switching between columns- and rows-setting can be done with a button. From the feedback I got until now there are only very, very less users out there who prefer to work with the columns- and rows-setting in parallel and it seems not to justify an own view mode for this.

Just for interest: What would be your reason to switch between the 2 settings dynamically? Background of the question: I can give a lot of answers why someone wants to have a details view in directory A, a column view in directory B and an icons view in directory C. However until now I got no answer why someone wants to have an icon view (column aligned) in directory D and an icon view (row aligned) in directory E...
Comment 5 Janet 2009-05-09 11:30:44 UTC
Well, I try to explain:

I have folders which contain "just files" and folders that contain links to configuration applications, folders with informational material, help files etc. For the first type of folder I like to have the standard symbol view in rows, for the second type I prefer the symbol view in columns because it looks more menu like and somewhat clearer, less cluttered, straight. And often I temporarily change the view for the first type of folder from large icons & row view to smaller icons plus columns view to have a better overview in large directories. In KDE3's konqueror that was a quick click on the symbol in the toolbar plus a quick click on the minus symbol next to the view mode symbol. Very fast, very easy, very comfortable. And when I'm through with searching and want to enjoy the fine icons again switching to row view is just a click away. :)
Comment 6 Janet 2009-05-09 11:42:37 UTC
Hmm. Maybe this example explains: Default view in my home folder is large icons and row view. When I e.g. want to enter my icons folder I orientate towards the folder's individual icon not towards the folder's name. So huge icons and row view is optimal. But when I search for a special file in the same directory like let's say dummy.txt I don't orientate towards the icon but the file's name so I prefer smaller icons and columns view. So my preferred view mode in a directory depends on what I want to do right now.
Comment 7 Janet 2009-05-09 18:06:36 UTC
Sorry, I just realize my working behaviour while working...
When I work with pictures I prefer row view, for text files I prefer column view. I'm just working on a superkaramba theme and have enabled column view in dolphin while working on the theme files and every time I look into the pic's folder (quite often) there's this ungovernable feeling to immediately switch to row view... Really, I don't know why, it just "suits better".

So I have found about three situations where I want to switch between row and column. Enough explained? Hmm, maybe you could change the reports name to something like "button for on the fly switching to column view"? :)

Thanks Janet for this useful input! From an implementation point of view there are several solutions to fulfill your wish -> I've one last question: Do you use the setting "(x) Remember view properties for each folder" or "(x) Use common view properties for all folders" (the corresponding settings is available under Configure Dolphin... -> View Modes -> General).
Comment 9 Janet 2009-05-09 21:47:39 UTC
Ahem... that depends... On my notebook I use "Remember view properties for each folder". I found out that it better suits my needs because there are enough folders for which I always want to have a fixed specific look. And on my desktop box I use "Use common view properties for all folders"... <bad girl, I know>.

OK, I've reopened this wish :-)

I too would like to see the feature to have split the icon view mode into column and row view mode and to be able to switch between both with a toolbar button. I'd like to set it a) temporary and b) fixed for some folders to row and for some to column layout, depending on the content and usage of the folder.
Comment 12 Ravi Arora 2010-11-01 07:36:22 UTC
This is a very required feature in a file manger and I want it a lot. because I have long file names about technical paper which I need to read before I can tell about a file.
Comment 13 Janet 2010-11-01 15:05:58 UTC
@#12: This view mode exists, you just have to dig deep into dolphin's settings to activate it. Column and row alignement by now are submodes of the icon view mode. This wishlist entry is about making the row aligned icon view mode a separate view mode so that one can switch to it on the fly/temporarily/via a toolbar button - just as you do with the grouping of icons (and like the other view modes it should be a per directory setting).

Maybe call the column aligned icon view mode just "icon mode" and the row aligned icon view mode "list mode" or so. So that we have 4 view modes (icons, list, details, rows) plus the grouping.
Comment 14 Janet 2010-11-01 15:11:56 UTC
BTW: It is still not very clear for me which submode is which. If it is row aligned or column aligned for text below the icons or text at the right side. "List view" would make it clear IMHO that the text is at the side of the icons.

If I tweak the icon view of dolphin I get the required view. But I want it to be added as separate view and with variable column field. See the attachments:

Seems to be now the "compact view" in dolphin 2. Thanks :).
