Description Dotan Cohen 2009-05-07 19:04:38 UTC
Version: (using KDE 4.2.2)
Installed from: Ubuntu Packages

In KDE 3 the default file manager (Konqueror) had the option to "Open Terminal Here" from the context menu. Please add this ability to Dolphin. Thanks.

Note that the KDE 4 Konqueror is missing this feature too.

+1 This is, possibly, the only reason that I'm still using krusader.

The in-built terminal is useful, I wouldn't remove it, but it is only one terminal, and when running a task of any duration, it is tied up. Furthermore, when a "long" task is running, the behaviour is strange when you change directories.

Note that Dolphin will have an "Open Terminal" option in the "Tools" menu in KDE 4.3 (also accessible via Shift-F4) which opens a Konsole in the current directory.
Comment 3 Peter Penz 2009-05-07 23:51:16 UTC
In KDE 4.3 a service menu is available, that allows to open a terminal with the context menu. Please note that the availability of the service menu is out of scope of Dolphin itself; it is in the hand of the application (in this case the Terminal) to provide such a menu. However it seems in KDE 4.3 this is provided per default already (at least in my installation this service menu is available).

If you're interested in more informations about service menus, please check http://techbase.kde.org/index.php?title=Development/Tutorials/Creating_Konqueror_Service_Menus

Cool. Thanks for the excellent feedback guys. "Open terminal" is already there, but there is no option to access is via a key command.

It's also tucked away in a submenu, a behaviour I intensely dislike. Not your problem, I think, but a serious weakness in kde4 that users cannot manage the application menus as they choose. as an example, TortoiseSVN does this excellently on Windows. Directory Opus has a separate menu editor, a brilliant idea, but better implemented at the kde4-level, imo, so every app could have it.

I don't seem to be able to reopen this! How can it be RESOLVED/FIXED, if it is not yet available?

A further problem with this issue is that once in a folder, the open terminal option is no longer available at all. This requires you to navigate up a level to open the terminal. That, I believe, is a bug; it's certainly unworkabl.

Anyway, I'll ditch dolphin now - especially as rename is broken, I raised a bug on launchpad fo this - and wait for it to mature. I am always happy to help, but not whne issues are closed prior to resolution.
Comment 6 Peter Penz 2009-05-10 19:14:38 UTC
@Marc: It is marked as closed as the original request has been implemented in Dolphin for KDE 4.3. If you still miss a feature, please feel free to open a new request with a detailed description what is still missing from your point of view. Thanks!

PS: do you have the bug number in bugs.kde.org what is broken when renaming files?

According to Marcs comment, the bug has been reported on Launchpad. However, the developers are only notified about Launchpad bug reports if they are forwarded to KDE's official bug tracking system (bugs.kde.org). Marc, please file a new bug report on bugs.kde.org about the rename bug or just provide a link to the report in Launchpad such that we can have a look at it. Thanks!
