Created attachment 35635 [details] excerpts from screenshots I find also that some widgets (especially the digital clock) take too much room on the panel in KDE 4.2.4. I am used to see more entries from the window list in KDE 3.5.10, too.
I hope that visual space requirements of the current graphical user interface can be reduced.
the clock occupies the room it needs, spacers can help push items around as well.

This isn't fixed. The bug is about the width of the digital clock which depends on the height of the panel. The wish is about decreasing the width of the clock without decreasing the height of the panel. That can't be done with sliders.
Just a reminder for the bug. Sven is very correct about it. Clock should be more flexible, including specific font size. Since the font size is relative to the panel size, a "correct" or a more consistent if you wish, is to resize the panel when clock's font size is larger than the available space I don't know if it is possible with QT to calculate the minimum pixel size from DPI and font size, but anyway, it's just an idea).

How do you think about a choice for the setting of growth limitations? Would you like to switch the layout strategy to an absolute approach above an adjustable widget size? Is there a need to apply properties like padding and horizontal/vertical alignment for a proper information display under specific circumstances?

It is more complicated, probably, but a more complete solution. But, is anyone listening? I mean, even for the technical point of view, it is interesting to improve the applets...
We need to be able to set the font and size of the widget from within the widget. It should not get all of it's sizing hints from the containment. This is a general bug across all KDE, and it is beginning to get old. (I am willing to pay money to get it fixed) KDE is the best!)
No longer an issue in Plasma 5.
