Description Dotan Cohen 2009-05-02 14:35:15 UTC
Version: (using KDE 4.2.2)
Installed from: Ubuntu Packages

In KDE 3 the System Monitor panel applet could be configured to show graphs for CPU load, memory load, disk space, temp, network, battery, and many other figures. In KDE 4 the System Monitor plasmoid shows no info in the panel, instead the user must click on the plasmoid to get floating windows that many user find difficult to use. It is possible to add separate plasmoids for each monitored function that the user may wish to monitor in the panel, however there are many disadvantages to this situation.

I propose that the behaviour of the System Monitor plasmoid be changed to mimic that of the KDE 3 equivalent, which was to let the user choose which graphs to add from a single plasmoid. The advantages are:
1) All the monitored functions will be maintained together, thus can be improved together. For instance, users have expressed a need for graphs. Some of the plasmoids currently have graphs (such as the CPU load) while others don't (such as the temp gauge).
2) Similar to (1), new features will be available to all monitored functions. For instance, users have requested to be able to define ranges for graphs and to have Y-axis markers. If all the monitored functions are together in a single plasmoid, then this feature needs to be added only once.
3) derived from (1) and (2), consistency between monitored functions. Whatever features / bugs affect one monitored function will affect the others.

I agree.

System monitor configuration is going to remain simple but if you need more configuration options check if these help:
