Description Dotan Cohen 2009-04-27 01:04:34 UTC
Version: (using KDE 4.2.2)
Installed from: Ubuntu Packages

Please incorporate some type of quality control in the descriptions of items shown in the "Install New Widgets" section of the "Add Plasmoid" window. It seems that KDE is taking the data from kde-look or some such site. The problem is that some of the descriptions seems very immature or ridiculous, which in turn makes the whole of KDE look immature or ridiculous.

"A plasmoid someone asked for"
"I want to share with you this second (in)-utile bar ..."
"I want to share with you this (in)-utile bar whit my ..."
"Hello..."

Furthermore, most of the other plasmoids have incorrect grammar. There should be some sort of approval process before letting this content into KDE. Frankly, I am embarrassed to move users to KDE 4 lest they should see this.

"It seems that KDE is taking the data from kde-look or some such site."

that's exactly where these come from. they are user contributed content.

"Furthermore, most of the other plasmoids have incorrect grammar"

this represents a whole new level of uselessness in bug reporting. if you've noticed grammatical errors, please collate them into a list and send them to plasma-devel@kde.org and we'll get them fixed up. but vague comments like this one are completely useless.

i'd love to see someone going through all the text and proof reading it; i don't have the time to look at every single i18n'd string that makes it into svn and most of the people working on kde have english as a second language.

step up and help improve things.

"There should be some sort of approval process before letting this content into KDE."

we have considered doing this, but that's really something you need to take up more with kde-look.org than kde.org. i'm also pretty sure it would be poorly met by people who are sharing things freely with others via such social sites.

"Frankly, I am embarrassed to move users to KDE 4 lest they should see this."

i somehow doubt comments from other users in a dialog to add user generated content that will turn people off.

There is no problem with the content being displayed as such on kde-look.org, however the plasmoids selected to show in the KDE desktop should have at least a minimum of quality control. Yes, I understand that these plasmoids are not part of the KDE desktop from a developer's point of view, who understands the process involved, however from a user's point of view he interacted with the configuration settings of his desktop, not a web browser, and this is what was presented to him. This is part of the KDE desktop from a user's perspective.

So long as the KDE desktop is pulling in this data from kde-look.org it is KDE's responsibility to ensure the quality control of the product. Mozilla has a similar procedure for Firefox addons that are shown and recommended in the browser's configuration.

I have been looking to contribute to KDE for a long time bug as a non-coder I have just been filing and triaging bugs (hundreds, if you care to check). If an approval process is devised then I am willing to maintain it: I will go through the potential plasmoids, and check them for grammar and professional text. I will make recommendations of correction to the authors when need be. Of course I appreciate their work and my goal is not to be a barrier to entry, wuite the opposite, my goal is to improve KDE and having more plasmoids available will certainly be an improvement.

In light of my proposal I am reopening this bug. Let me know what you think, we can discuss in private mail or by phone if you wish, Aaron. I know that your time is valuable and I would not waste by it reopening a bug that you closed if this were not an important issue.

"In light of my proposal I am reopening this bug."

*sigh*

way to work together, huh?

i'll move this to a wishlist item, which is probably what it should have been in the first place. and no, i'm really not interested in discussing it further than what i've already written above.

and in future, if you could just keep it to "cause -> result -> solution" i'd appreciate it. it makes it a lot less frustrating to deal with b.k.o on a daily basis, whereas right now you've moved me a little closer to not wanting to read let alone touch another report on here.

Hello!

This feature request was filed for KDE Plasma 4, which reached end-of-support status in August 2015. KDE Plasma 5's desktop shell has been almost completely rewritten for better performance and usability, so it is likely that this feature request is already implemented in Plasma 5, or is no longer applicable.

Accordingly, we hope you understand why we must close this feature request. If the requested feature is still desired but not implemented in KDE Plasma 5.12 or later, please feel free to open a new ticket in the "plasmashell" product after reading https://community.kde.org/Get_Involved/Bug_Reporting

If you would like to get involved in KDE's bug triaging effort so that future mass bug closes like this are less likely, please read https://community.kde.org/Get_Involved#Bug_Triaging

Thanks for your understanding!

Nate Graham
