I confirm it happening on Gentoo (KDE 4.2.2).

There should be an option to prevent opening every file in a folder, no matter what. This might work well with small files, but as soon as large files or slow media are involved, things get really slow. Previews and information are eye-candy and nice to have, but first of all a file manager should be fast and efficient.

@Bugsquad-team: This seems to be an issue in the PDF thumbnail plugin. I don't know the internals of the PDF format, but I guess it is not necessary to completely load a 200 MB PDF file to show a preview of the first page. However: I'm not sure which bug-component is the right target for this. Do you have a hint?

Assuming that I'm wrong and a PDF preview cannot be done without loading the whole file, I'll take care to provide an upper limit option for the Information Panel. BTW: in KDE 4.3 the preview itself in the Information Panel can be turned off already (the other meta information will still be visible).

Hi!
I have almost exactly the same problem, but with MP4 files. When I move my mouse over MP4 files (I'm using single click, if that makes any difference), dolphin starts hammering my system (100% CPU, intensive disk read and high memory usage). It's like its trying to read whole file into RAM.

It's clearly visible when dolphin have to deal with large files (~1GB and larger). When I tried to select ~1.7 GB MP4 file, dolphin was frozen for 2 minutes! And setting size limit for previews in dolphin configuration dialog, doesn't help.

I'm on KDE 4.3.1, but I've experienced this issues also on earlier versions.

The root cause of those issues are in Strigi:
http://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detail&aid=2830904&group_id=171000&atid=856302
http://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detail&aid=2830902&group_id=171000&atid=856302

In KDE 4.3 the problem should not disappear when using the Information Panel, but they are still there when tooltips are enabled. In KDE 4.4 Dolphin will use the same mechanism for tooltips as the Information Panel to retrieve the meta information -> the issues should be bypassed then (although for sure it would be better if the root cause would be fixed too).

This issue has been fixed in KDE SC 4.5.0
