Version: (using KDE 4.2.2) Compiler: GCC 4.1.2 OS: Linux Installed from: Gentoo Packages After upgrading several packages to kde 4.2.2 (from 4.2.1), the Kickoff start menu no longer has any applications listed. Also, when trying to open files the "open with" dialog appears but also has no applications listed. New users and existing users are unaffected (they still have all the normal applications listed). Only the single "jake" user was affected. I have tried removing both the ~/.kde4 folder and even the entire home directory. Neither fixed the issue. Also removing and readding the Kickoff plasmoid did not work. I assume something deeper is corrupted since the "Open with" dialog has also been affected.
I figured out a workaround for the issue. Remove /var/tmp/kdecache-jake. Should KDE setup symbolic links inside of a users homedir? This makes it slighly harder to fixed issues such as this.
I got the same problem - at least, I think so. Sadly removing /var/tmp/kdecache-* didn't work for me. Also I only got the problem when not running a full kde session, e.g. fluxbox. (fyi, I already filed a bug at bugs.gentoo.org as I couldn't find this bug before and thought it was a distro problem... http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=273066)
Feel free to reopen the report if the problem still happens in KDE SC 4.8.4 o higher verions.
