When not using desktop effects (which has window repainting issues) the shutdown / logout etc dialogs are very slow (10 sec) to appear after clicking on them in the Kickoff Application Launcher.

If I enable desktop effects they are near instantaneous.

Same here, with kubuntu karmic. Also happened in Kubuntu Jaunty with the kde 4.3 packages from ppa.
I can't confirm they appear instantly with desktop effects, but they definitely take a long time to appear without them.

Well, with KDE SC 4.5.0 I have the opposite effect: shutdown dialog is very slow to appear when composite effects are enabled. My notebook has a ATI HD4570 video card, it used to work ok with KDE SC 4.4.5.

The new QML shutdown dialog in 4.9.x appears fast here as long as the kernel does not need to swap out the pages it is stored in. Do you still have this problem with 4.9.0?
