Description Alex Dănilă 2009-04-16 21:07:40 UTC
Version: (using KDE 4.2.2)
OS: Linux
Installed from: Debian testing/unstable Packages

kxkb of KDE4 can only provide four keyboard layouts. This is an xorg bug.
It would be nice if kxkb could work around this and provide more layouts, even if it meant keyboard reconfiguration and it is "expensive".

I have never noticed the keyboard switching delay with KDE 3 on my old slow computer, so this isn't actually such a problem.

Expensiveness of switching layouts is not just about performance, it was also introducing many other problems, more than half a dozen of (quite ugly) kxkb bugs were closed just because we're switching groups now as x.org was designed.

Workaround is possible but will take quite a bit of time to implement and will complicate maintainance.

There was actually some work on improving xkb protocol but I have't followed it close enough latetly.
