Description Bohan 2009-04-12 05:10:17 UTC
Version: kdebase-workspace 4.2.2-1 (Arch Linux i686) (using KDE 4.2.2)
Compiler: GCC 4.3.3 gcc 4.3.3-1 (Arch Linux i686)
OS: Linux
Installed from: Unlisted Binary Package

I am using nvidia 180.44 with twinview on 2 17in LCDs (1280x1024 24bpp)
This happens about once a day.
The task manager panel becomes blank, but clicking in the right places still results in the correct action.
This is sometimes followed by a crash of plasma

The crash is bug 174787. The text dissapearing seems to be another issue.
Let's use this bug for that rendering issue.

As you are using Arch I guess your Qt package is updated.
What is your graphics card?
Do you experience this on any other Plasma widget? (besides the task bar)

Thanks
Comment 4 Bohan 2009-04-13 00:58:06 UTC
Qt version: 4.5.0-3
GPU: nVidia Geforce 9600GT - G94 Rev A1 (65nm, 64 sp, 256bit 512MB, PCIE 2.0)

Now that you mention it, I do notice loss of background and frame in some other widgets too. They occur together.

Can you detail the widgets that have this problem ? Can you try to take some screenshots ? Thanks a lot
Comment 6 jos poortvliet 2009-04-16 18:22:22 UTC
Try to logout and log in again. This can happen when you upgrade other KDE while it is running.

As my original report on bug 18710 has been closed as a duplicate of this one:
I am experiencing the 'vanishing icons' typically 2 times every day, plasma does not crash, and clicking (left button) on the original position of the vanished icon still produces the correct behaviour. After a short time, all icons on desktop and panel vanish, and eventually the panel disappears as well.
KDE 4.2.2 from fedora 10 update RPMs, and Nvidia 180.53 drivers. I understand from other reports that the same problem happens with ATI cards.
Comment 10 doc.evans 2009-05-07 00:59:52 UTC
This has happened several times to me today.

And as I reported in one of the earlier bug reports for pre-4.2.2 versions of this bug... copying large numbers of files and leaving the notification on the screen definitely makes this bug almost certain to occur here.

nvidia drivers problem
Comment 12 Li Lo 2009-05-20 12:14:21 UTC
Has this problem been reported to nvidia? Could you please provide a link to the report so we can talk to nvidia about it? Thanks.
Comment 13 Dario Andres 2009-05-20 23:23:34 UTC
Please look at bug 186710 comment 20
Comment 14 doc.evans 2009-05-21 00:47:12 UTC
I note that if one follows the links, one discovers that the nvidia discussion concludes that it's a Qt bug, which makes a lot of sense since it seems that nvidia, ATI and Intel users have all experienced the problem. It does seem worst on nvidia, but I'm on ATI and I typically experience it at least once a day in normal use, and can trigger it at will (see comment 10 above).

The bug seems sufficiently pervasive that I expect the Qt developers are trying pretty hard to nail it.

I wonder if http://darktears.wordpress.com/2009/05/22/the-plasma-leak-story/ is related. Check it. Thanks
Comment 16 doc.evans 2009-05-22 14:53:43 UTC
Sounds like it. I wonder if the trigger mentioned in comment 10 also creates these pixmap things; that essentially is 100% guaranteed to induce the problem here, in a rather easy way, so it will be easy to test once this fix reaches user-land.
