Description H.H. 2009-04-10 11:57:12 UTC
Version:           1.2.80 (using 4.2.68 (KDE 4.2.68 (KDE 4.3 >= 20090327)) "release 1.1", KDE:KDE4:UNSTABLE:Desktop / openSUSE_11.0)
Compiler:          gcc
OS:                Linux (i686) release 2.6.25.11-0.1-pae

I try to start dolphin as root-user. nothing happens. after a while the following error message appears in console:

<unknown program name>(10606)/: Communication problem with "dolphin" , it probably crashed.
Error message was: "org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NoReply" : " "Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or the network connection was broken." "

Here, too.
Starting Dolphin normally, no problem in normal or root mode.
Starting normal Dolphin from Console results in these messages, and no dolphin starting:
"/usr/bin/dolphin(4037)" Error in thread 3050097456 : "org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.ServiceUnknown - The name org.kde.nepomuk.services.nepomukstorage was not provided by any .service files"
"/usr/bin/dolphin(4037)" Error in thread 3050097456 : "QLocalSocket::connectToServer: Invalid name"
dolphin(4037): Attempt to use QAction "close_tab" with KXMLGUIFactory!
dolphin(4037): Attempt to use QAction "show_info_panel" with KXMLGUIFactory!
dolphin(4037): Attempt to use QAction "show_folders_panel" with KXMLGUIFactory!
dolphin(4037): Attempt to use QAction "show_terminal_panel" with KXMLGUIFactory!

Going into root mode in konsole and starting dolphin results in only disk activity and no dolphin starting, without any comments from console.

Thanks for the bug report!

@H.H.: How did you start Dolphin as root? From a Konsole where you're logged in as root, using "kdesu dolphin" or some other way? Does it help if you run "dolphin --nofork" instead of just "dolphin"? Maybe your problem is related to bug 165268.

@Stefan: I'm not sure if your problem is the same as H.H.'s because the symptoms seem to be different. If I understand you correctly, you can't run Dolphin from Konsole at all, no matter if you're root or not. This should probably be filed as a new report. It's funny that I get similar messages as you when I run a root Dolphin from Konsole with "gksu dolphin" on Kubuntu 8.10, but Dolphin starts fine anyway.

Well, I upgraded to KDE4.2.2, and now :
a) normal dolphin in konsole starts ok without error messages
b) kdesu dolphin in konsole gives the same error messages as cited above, but starts okay (identical to what frank described with Kubuntu above)
c) going su in konsole and starting dolphin results in no disc activity and konsole "hangs" (no further input possible, no error messages at all)
I am going to go and file a new bug report for my problem.

See also bug report https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=187985
it would seem to me I should rather file these two under konsole and not dolphin, as both are problems only in su mode of konsole.

I have written a konsole bug report under https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=189450
Comment 6 H.H. 2009-04-12 20:00:32 UTC
to the question: I tried "su" in konsole and kdesu from a kde3-session

in my next session I could not reproduce this bug, all worked fine.

today i tried from a kde4-session: dolphin started but the file-panel was empty, and an error displayed like "no connection to klauncher"

Here,running dolphin from 'kdesu dolphin' opens it up okay but,every action is slow,like listing folder contents.
