Could a natural and standard tab bar be added to Kate? This has been bugging me for ages, look at all the other applications that use the nice Tab Bar, that can be draggable, etc.

The current plugin to make "real" tabs available in Kate, just basically seems to take a bunch of KPushButtons and slap them on a horizontal layout... this is horrible in my opinion, you don't see any other application doing this.

I don't use the Document list panel that pops out either, I dislike that also, tabs (the standard ones that KDE uses) are my favorite, and I would love to have them in Kate, as this is the one big turn-off for me in this text editor.

It shouldn't be much trouble, albeit you would not be able to customize as much as you can currently with the weird way of doing tabs, but you can't do that with the rest of KDE either, so no real loss in my opinion.

It could even remain a plugin still, since all you have to do is add a KTabBar into the layout and connect a few signals and slots, and bam. Although, I feel that it would make more sense to have it as an option, rather than a plugin.

I wouldn't mind doing this, if it were ok to do, but I would have to know if it was ok or not to get rid of the plugin, etc.

Thanks.

i don't see a problem with this as long as it doesn't affect the way katepart operates with other applications (i.e. it's limited only to the kate application).

Yeah, it doesn't seem to be used in other applications afics.
