Description yezhov 2009-03-23 14:41:36 UTC
Version: (using KDE 4.2.1)
OS: Linux
Installed from: SuSE RPMs

Steps to reproduce: Error occurs if copying a large and complicated folder subtree with thousands of sub items with a total size of a couple of Gigs. Right-click at the root of the folder hierarchy to be copied, then, in the context menu, select copy to .. and then browse through the drop-down menus and select the destination folder. Then, one or two progress dialogues appear for a relatively short time and then disappear. It looks like the copy is finished successfully, no error messages, no crash and no strange phenomena. But in fact, only some files are copied, usually not more than hundred. I observed this behaviour in OpenSuse 11.1, KDE 4.2.1 and in the current version of Knoppix. In my case, the copying was either from a cifs share to the local disk or vice versa, but i dont know if this is relevant to reproduce the bug. Also, in both cases I was able to perform the copy successfully using Thunar.

Thanks for the report. Did the progress dialogs appear as "black popups" in the bottom right corner or did they look like "normal" dialog windows? The background of the question the following: In 4.2 all progress popups are shown by a Plasmoid. The progress disappears after a few seconds (no matter if it has been finished or not) and is replaced by an (i)-button (clicking the (i) button shows the progress again).

AFAIK some rework is done for this in KDE 4.3, but I'd need to know whether your issue might be related to this problem.

Sorry for the delay. Now I have investigated the behavior more carefully. The copy operation is in fact not aborted - only the progress dialogs disappear (or seem to disappear). Checking the destination folder from time to time reveals that the number of files there increases gradually. The progress dialogs in fact seem to move to a small area on the right side of the bottom control bar, but they are not really visible there. This area is called the system view (systemansicht in the German version). The actual problem is that this system view is corrupted - instead of the icons for klipper, network manager, the volume control and the update applet i see only black boxes. So, probably some of these black boxes stand in fact for the progress dialogs. I also see an i- button sometimes, but when i click on it, there appears the network manager, but when there is a copy operation going on, then the i- button stands for the progress dialog, and still some other times the network manager is represented by one of the black boxes. So, this bug is in fact about the system view and not dolphin.

@Plasma-team: I forwarded this issue to Plasma. I got several reports lately that the progress dialogs in Dolphin disappear too early. I know that they are just hidden and that there is the (i)-button, but maybe the default setting should not hide the progress dialogs.
