Description karaluh 2009-03-17 14:53:41 UTC
Version: (using KDE 4.2.0)
OS: Linux
Installed from: Ubuntu Packages

In 80% of the cases when I select some text by holding LMB, the first letter isn't sellected. To ensure it is, I have to very precisely move the mouse cursor at the appropriate possition before starting to select the text - it takes lot of time.

Where do you select text? Which applications/widgets?
Comment 2 karaluh 2009-03-17 15:31:46 UTC
I think it's true for all apps, I verified it for Firefox, kopete and konqueror.

If this also happens on Firefox which is KDE unrelated, then it should not be a KDE bug. Do you have any other non-KDE application to test with ?
Thanks

kadu is qt only, I've also tested against Synaptic (gtk) and Opera (qt). The problem is valid in kadu, slightly less in Synaptic and almost nonexistent in Opera (all occurences I would consider user error). The difference between Opera and all the odher apps is the cursor, Opera uses arrow for text sellection. I'll change the cursor theme and do some more testing.

Ok, after more testing I'm not sure if it's a bug anymore. It's hard to be accurate when selecting text not using double click though, especially when the word starts with a thin letter (i,l,t). Maybe the first letter should be automatically added to the sellection, when the sellection starts from the seccond letter of the word. But I'm not an usability expert, so I'll leave the decision up to you. As for my issues I'll just have to change my habit to use double click.

I guess this is more related to the X (video server) mouse handling.

I tried KTextEditor (Kate), QLineEdit/QTextEdit, and KHTML, and all of them were smart enough to use the 50/50 rule for selection, i.e. which character is included is decided on which half of the character you started/end your selection.

If you still see this problem, please reopen or report the to the application where you see it.
