All the better would be if I could switch off the whole tab to make it disappear. The menu editor on rightclick-context is next to useless for this, as it only allows me to change application order and related.

I agree. Recently used can be a time waster if you don't use it. I think the change can be good for some but a real problem for others. It can also be a privacy/security issue.
