Description doc.evans 2009-03-06 17:30:14 UTC
Version: (using KDE 4.2.0)
OS: Linux
Installed from: Ubuntu Packages

This problem appears have appeared starting with KDE 4.2.

When I log in, kopete automatically appears in the system tray. In the past (prior to 4.2) the behaviour was:
1. Right click on kopete icon
2. Set status > Online
3. Kwallet would pop up, asking for my password
4. enter password
5. kopete goes online

Starting with 4.2, the behaviour (100% reproducible) is that after step 2, nothing happens.

Repeating step 2 any number of times makes no difference.

The only way to proceed to step 3 now is to left-click the kopete icon after step 2.

Once kopete is online, then right-clicking works as it did prior to KDE 4.2, until one logs out and back in.

Here's how I tried to reproduce this:

1. Close all my open wallets
2. Start kopete (i had no running instance already)
3. Right-click the system-tray
4. Click 'Online' from the 'Set Status' menu.

I can't reproduce this. The KDE Wallet popup shows fine, i can enter my password and all is well. KDE 4.2.1

Did you do this immediately after logging in? That's when I see the failure.

And how many times did you do this following a log on?

It seems to be intermittent. One way that seems to guarantee the problem (I tried a few times, and they all failed) was to fill the screen with another window first.

[It isn't just that the kwallet window then appears behind the window I've put on the screen; I can remove that window and there's no kwallet behind it; and also there's no kwallet task in the panel. The presence of a window seems to guarantee that the kwallet window will be inhibited. Without that additional window there first, the failure occurs only sometimes.]

That sounds like you're starting from a different point. It sounds like you had an already-in-use system. I have never been able to reproduce the bug on such a system.

I just spent some time on this and this sequence produced the failure every time here:

1. log out
2. restart X
3. log in
4. fill the screen with a window (in my case I used FF to fill the screen, but I imagine that anything will work)
5. Right click the kopete icon and go online

5a. Nothing happens.

6. Go to a different virtual desktop.
7. Right click the kopete icon and go online

7a. Nothing happens

8. Left click on kopete icon

8a. Now, at last, the kwallet dialogue appears.

Since it sounds like you were not going through the correct sequence to trigger the bug, I don't think it's valid to mark this bug as RESOLVED/WORKSFORME.

I'm not sure whether the reporter is allowed to change the status of a bug. But I'm going to try, and see what happens.

(If you can go through the sequence above a few times and still don't see the bug, then I guess I won't be able t argue with the WORKSFORME. Although that wouldn't actually fix the problem, of course.)
