I find it a nice idea, to have another choice to notify the user by blinking the keyboard's scroll lock light for some seconds maybe. It might be the most distinctive notification.

That would be nice, as an alternative. In specific cycles with no pop-ups.

Script that blinks the scroll lock LED

This file can be excecuted by knotify (manually added at notification settings of every application (e.g. kopete). See remarks for execution.
Uses "xset led". In my machine needs "xset led 3" to work for scroll lock, but this can be adopted easily.
