Description Marco Schulze 2009-02-23 21:40:50 UTC
Version:            (using KDE 4.2.0)
OS:                Linux
Installed from:    Ubuntu Packages

Quite often, already for quite a while (with KDE 4.1 as well as KDE 4.2), I have bad artefacts in kicker and konsole as well as the main desktop background.

Take a look at the screenshots I attached to this issue:

*** kde4-artefacts-kicker-screenshot.jpg ***
This shows how kicker looks like quite often: It is impossible to know where to click, because the whole kicker area shows only scrambled colourful garbage. Note that it's fully functional - only a display bug.

*** kde4-artefacts-konsole-screenshot.jpg ***
The right side is a konsole window (even though it doesn't look like one). You see that the Eclipse window is shining through and the scrambled konsole shows some real console contents only in the lower part.

For the artefacts of the background, I have no screen shots, because it was not yet annoying enough ;-) It's only colour inversion of my background images or the background images stay completely black. The dashboard-widgets on top work fine.

I have the impression that all these problems mainly occur when I'm using a big application window that covers both of my monitors (I'm using big-desktop with an Nvidia GeForce 7300 GT). If I have only small application windows (that reside on only one of the monitors) the problem seems to happen only quite rarely (or even not at all). It's hard to say for me, though, because I'm working most of the time with big application windows (=> Eclipse).

I just added two more screenshots:

*** kde4-background-artefacts.jpg ***
This demonstrates the background artefacts. As you can see the non-image areas of the background are completely black and the image suffers incorrect colours.

*** kde4-background-correct.jpg ***
For comparison, I added this screenshot demonstrating how it should look like.

Btw., I saw today that these problems definitely happen, too, if I only use windows on one monitor (no big windows).

I just looked at the first screenshot and you are using eclipse. Do you experience the problem also if you are not using eclipse?

Please answer the question from comment #6.

I think that I saw these artefacts already when not using Eclipse. But since I'm nearly always having an Eclipse open, I'm not 100% sure. I'll explicitely try it out and will let you know.

I can already say for sure that the artefacts occur even on desktops where there is no Eclipse (take a look at this screen shot - http://bugsfiles.kde.org/attachment.cgi?id=31599 - for example). But I do not know for sure whether there was an Eclipse running on another desktop at the same time.
Comment 9 Marco Schulze 2009-04-08 14:04:36 UTC
OK. I can tell now for sure that I get these artefacts, too, if there is *NO* Eclipse running at all. I was just working in an rdesktop and when I moved the mouse out of the rdesktop window, the KDE4 background immediately turned black. Moving the mouse around caused the background to flicker in various colours.

In total, I had the following applications running:

* Desktop 1:
  - konsole in full screen on the right monitor.
  - Firefox in full screen on the right monitor (hidden by konsole).
* Desktop 2: *nothing*
* Desktop 3: rdesktop with 2400x1550 over both monitors.
* Desktop 4: *nothing*

After the last online-update of Kubuntu 8.10 with experimental KDE 4.2, I did not see the problems anymore. I lately updated to Kubuntu 9.04 and fortunately the bug didn't return. Therefore, I assume it is fixed and mark this issue as RESOLVED.
