Version: (using KDE 4.2.0) OS: Linux Installed from: Unlisted Binary Package I have a Lenovo Thinkpad R61i, so the volume keys send keyboard scan codes, which I have Xmodmapped to XF86Audio{Mute,LowerVolume,RaiseVolume}. I have the above keys set as the keyboard shortcuts in KMix, but they only work when the mixer window is open (Right-click applet -> Show Mixer Window -> Mixer). In this case, the volume is changed and the OSD reflects the change. When the Mixer window is closed, KMix ceases to respond to the key presses. Ideally, it should do exactly the same thing (change volume and show OSD) when only the tray applet is open. (This was the behavior in KDE 3, I believe.)
Forgot to mention - the unlisted binary packages are from a current distribution of Arch Linux.
I have seen such behaviour even in KDE3 with Amarok 1.4: media keys assigned to Amarok actions only worked when Amarok had focus, but a few (I think XF86AudioNext) worked even from different workspaces. Probably related to #143807 Reassigning to kdelibs as kglobalaccel is likely involved or guilty.
Move your xmodmapping to ~/.kde(4?)/env (http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=54234). See if it works and please report back. Mike

Well, I'm not sure how I missed the request for more info 9 years ago, but I don't have that laptop anymore and no easy way of getting KDE 4 at this point. So I guess we can close this as it's obsolete. No idea if it was ever fixed but I don't see an easy way to test it.
Thanks for the update!
