Description Sriram 2009-02-17 23:43:15 UTC
Version: (using KDE 4.2.0)
OS: Linux
Installed from: SuSE RPMs

This one is quiet serious.

Lets assume that there are 2 windows open (any 2). Here i will take Kontact and Firefox as an example.

Kontact and Firefox are running and i download a file from the internet through firefox. As soon as i press the save button, the system freezes. The keyboard does not work, and the only option is to reset and reboot the system.

This happens quiet often. It need not be a internet download, it can be a file save or a rapid shift between applications using ALT + TAB or a simple opening of mail.

Very strange problem and it happens often.

Are you using desktop effects? (Compositing) ?
Comment 2 Sriram 2009-02-17 23:58:23 UTC
Yes.

In Configure Desktop the following details are entered

Desktop Effects is enabled
Improved Windows Management is enabled
Shadows is enabled
Various Animation is enabled

Effect for Window Switching : Box Switch
Effect for Desktop Switching: Slide
Animation Speed: Normal

If you need any other details please do let me know.

If you disable all the desktop effects, does the freeze disappear? (It's probably related to the effects/compositing)
Thanks
Comment 4 Sriram 2009-02-18 00:04:45 UTC
No.

I have tried it with both the desktop effects on and off.

Both the cases the system freezes.

My system config is a Intel Dual Core 2.0 Ghz with 2 GB RAM and 500 GB Hard Disk.

A new kernel was published in Opensuse which resolves a critical issue in Inotify.

Can you please upgrade it and report if it fixes the issue ?

Thank you.

The version is 2.6.27.19
