Description jarauh 2009-02-06 16:10:07 UTC
Version:           0.8 (using KDE 4.2.0)
OS:                Linux
Installed from:    Gentoo Packages

I use okular to view pdf slides. When I change the LaTeX source of the slides and rerun LaTeX, okular notices this and reloads the document. During reload the "thumbnail" navigation panel pops up. A funny thing: This only happens when "Contents" are selected on the navigation panel.

How to reproduce:

* Open some PDF-File and LaTeX-sources.
* Open navigation panel and select "Contents".
* Hide navigation panel.
* Run LaTeX.
==> While LaTeX recreates the PDF-File, a gray background is shown together with a message "Reloading the document". During this time an (empty) navigation panel with headline "thumbnails" appears.

I don't see the problem of that.
When the document is reloaded, it is first closed and then reopened again. Then the previously chosen panel is restored.
When a document is closed, there's no TOC available, so that panel is disabled.

Of course it is not a problem; it as merely a small bug.

The gray background is not what annoys me, but the fact, that the navigation panel pops up, even though it should remain hidden.

Note: You need a PDF-file where LaTeX needs a lot of time in order to notice
the effect, e.g. slides with a lot of pictures.

I cannot reproduce the problem, either closing a side panel by clicking on its icon, or closing the whole side panel altogether via the settings menu.

There is a related problem, maybe someone can confirm this one:

As written above I usually hide the navigation panel. However, when I open a PDF-file (with contents), then the contents are shown on the left hand side.

The interesting thing about this: The contents are shown, but the icons of the navigation panel (contents, thumbnails, etc.) are hidden. If I want to hide the contents, I need to press F7 twice: The first time the navigation panel icons appear, the second time the navigation panel disappears (together with the contents).

Now sometimes I do like to view the contents. However, I rarely use the other icons of the navigation panel. But somehow I did not find a way of opening just the contents, without the icons. So once I press F7 I can never reach this state again.

(By the way: Konqueror uses F9 to show/hide the navigation panel. In my opinion both programs should use the same shortcut.)

I cannot confirm the initial bug report (gray background et al.), but I've only tried to reproduce it with small LaTeX files (don't have a big one here).

But I CAN confirm the related problem: when writing a LaTeX file in Kile, and pressing Alt+7 to view the pdf, Okular will open it, showing the contents side pane (with the document's table of contents), but NOT the icons of the navigation panel (contents, thumbnails, ...), exactly as described. This is indeed a MAJOR annoyance, because to hide that contents side pane I have to press F7 twice: once to show the navigation panel, and another one to hide both that navigation panel and the contents pane.

Steps to reproduce this are simple. Write a LaTeX document with Kile or whatever, and generate the pdf (Alt+6) in Kile. Now open that pdf file, either in Kile (Alt+7) or directly from Dolphin; in both cases the content side pane (but the navigation panel) will be shown initially.

#4 if we use the same key than in konqueror what is going to happen when okular is embedded in konqueror?
Comment 7 Albert Astals Cid 2010-02-20 19:08:26 UTC
Anyway, i'm closing the bug, since the bug explained in the bug description is not a bug at all but the intended way of working, users from #4 and #5 are hijacking the bug with a different issue. If you have a good way of reproducing the issue, please open a new bug explaining exactly what is your problem and how to reproduce the problem.

Thanks for using okular.

Hi Albert and Pino,

I think there was a misunderstanding: As Pino says, the previously chosen panel (i.e. also "none") should be restored upon reloading. But that's not what happens: If one hides the navigation panel altogether (using F7) and then reloads the document, then the navigation panel re-appears, even though it should remain hidden.

In previous versions of Okular (I think with KDE SC <4.5) this would only happen the first time the file gets reloaded, and afterwards (i.e. after hiding the panel again) the panel remains hidden. But now with Okular 0.11.1 there is no way of leaving the panel hidden. So unfortunately the use case "Have slides open in Okular while writing them in Latex" is basically unusable right now (because the panel needs way too much of the in this case important horizontal space).

Let me know if you can't reproduce this, or want a PDF file with which to test it.

Cheers,
Frank

Frank are you using KDE 4.5.3?

Hi Albert,

(In reply to comment #9)
> Frank are you using KDE 4.5.3?

[I assume you mean 4.5.2]

No I am not. But thanks for pointing this out, it seems from the changelog of 4.5.2 that this was reported and fixed in bug #249345.
Sorry that I didn't check this earlier, and found only this older bug report here. I will try and update to 4.5.2 now. :)

Thanks again for bothering to reply!
