Description David Johnson 2009-02-06 00:36:03 UTC
Version: (using KDE 4.2.0)
Compiler: gcc 4.3.3
OS: Linux
Installed from: Unlisted Binary Package

Sometimes KRunner will take a very long time to open up. For example: Typing Alt+F2, KRunner search bar appears relatively quickly, but then typing "gimp", the "gi" is displayed but krunner is slowly expanding over the course of ten seconds until it finally reaches it's height of 300 pixels, and not until them are the final "mp" displayed.

All runners are turned off except applications, command line and web shortcuts. Nothing else related to plasma is taking this long. All desktop effects are turned off. The system is not under load.

What is your graphics card/driver ?
Thanks
Comment 2 David Johnson 2009-02-06 18:37:27 UTC
It is a Radeon Mobility X1300, using fglrx driver, 9.1-1.
Comment 3 Dario Andres 2009-02-09 22:52:30 UTC
Can you try with a new clean user account ? (just for testing)
Thanks

No response from reporter. Closing as REMIND.
Comment 5 David Johnson 2009-03-15 00:14:19 UTC
Sorry, I missed that earlier email asking for a response.

Yes I had tried it on clean accounts, with no effect. I have subsequently overtweaked my xorg.conf, and it had a small improvement, but not much. It does not always happen, and I don't know the use case to get it to trigger.

It never happens on my other systems, which are FreeBSD with Open Source radeon drivers (for 9200 and X1550).

This always happens with me - when I press "Alt-F2", the poup takes at least 2 seconds to appear, and draws itself in two distinct phases. It looks very unprofessional and poor.

I'm using fglrx driver on a Dell Studio 17 laptop (recently bought, there should be no problem with performance on a machine like this).
Comment 8 Luke Plant 2009-09-15 14:17:09 UTC
I should have said - I'm using KDE 4.3.1, Ubuntu Jaunty (backports packages). This was much better for me on KDE 4.2
Comment 9 Luke Plant 2009-09-15 16:24:44 UTC
having logged out and in again, this problem has disappeared for me. I suspect it may have had something to do with changing plasma theme, but I can no longer reproduce.
Comment 10 Jacopo De Simoi 2010-01-02 10:54:25 UTC
There was indeed a regression for 4.2 -> 4.3 which got fixed in 4.3.4; some further optimizations have been done with 4.4 which should no longer cause drawing-related delays. Turning on desktop effects also should help in this setting.
Can anybody still reproduce with 4.3.4 or 4.4beta2?
Thanks

one week -> no answer;
This should really be fixed with 4.3.4 and should perform even better with 4.4
