Description Diego 2009-02-03 15:00:22 UTC
Version:           4.2.0 (using KDE 4.2.0)
Compiler:          gcc 4.3
OS:                Linux
Installed from:    Fedora RPMs

Fedora 10, KDE 4.2.0 from kde-testing repository.

Kickoff and KRunner have problems when running with Openbox WM and they sometimes aren't visible when not using a WM.

The Openbox issue seems (to me) related to the no WM issue because in both the cases the problems seems to be a lack of focus on Kickoff / KRunner. If not please tell me so I can file a separate report to the Openbox team.

OPENBOX ISSUE

How to reproduce:
- install the Openbox WM;
- open (for example) KWrite;
- execute "openbox --replace";
- click on the Kickoff launcher;
- start typing something, the text you write will be displayed in KWrite instead of the Kickoff search box.

The same applies to KRunner. The only way to type in the Kickoff search field / KRunner text field is to click on the text field area.

NO ACTIVE WINDOW MANAGER ISSUE:

How to reproduce:
- execute "kquitapp kwin";
- click on the menu launcher: sometimes you can see the Kickoff menu, sometimes you don't. Moreover, the times it gets displayed, I wasn't able to type in the text box.
To me it seems that the more you try to break things (e.g. close kwin, open metacity, switch to openbox, kill openbox, etc) the more the "I can't see Kickoff/KRunner" is frequent.

The same applies to KRunner. The classical menu instead works fine even without a WM.

I think Kickoff should be usable even without a WM.

I forgot to mention that with both KWin and Metacity Kickoff and KRunner behave as they should.

I can confirm this. Since the update to KDE 4.2.2 half an hour ago, I'm not able to get rid of the kickoff menu by clicking on the desktop anymore. I need to click the kickoff so that it is focused and then I can hide it by clicking on the desktop.
I also was used to open kickoff and just start typing something, like "sys" to quickly get to the system settings. This is not possible anymore.

I also confirm the oddness with kde-4.2.2/kwin (see also possible dup bug #188655)
Comment 5 Rasmus Steinke 2009-04-06 23:26:37 UTC
this bug report is about other WMs than kwin - nevertheless with the update to 4.2.2 kwin has this issue too :)
Comment 6 lucas 2009-04-07 13:14:02 UTC
A window manager is a _requirement_ to use X. When not using one the system will have undefined behavior so the second half of the opening report is invalid.

Confirmed here with kde-4.2.2/kwin, Ubuntu 8.10
Comment 8 Andi Clemens 2009-05-07 21:30:24 UTC
For me the issue is fixed with kwin and KDE 4.2.3.
Comment 9 Diego 2009-05-20 12:01:42 UTC
This issue is about Openbox and Kickoff, the one about KWin in 4.2.2 is bug #188655.

So to resume:
- no WM is actually not an issue (see comment #6)
- KWin has nothing to do with this issue
- the problem happens when you open Kickoff when using OpenBox

What is still not clear is if it's a Kickoff or an OpenBox issue.

Can someone please fix the title of the bug? Thanks.

please reopen if this is still a issue with kde 4.4 (beta 1) or 4.3
Comment 11 Diego 2009-12-06 22:36:40 UTC
This has been fixed by some KDE update: with the same Openbox version now Kickoff and KRunner work correctly.

So this problem is gone with 4.3.3.
