Description Dave Brain 2009-01-31 14:09:14 UTC
Version: 1.11.0 (using 4.2.00 (KDE 4.2.0), Arch Linux)
Compiler: gcc
OS: Linux (i686) release 2.6.28

The new theme layout for the select view appearance message viewer in kmail 1.11.0 is confusing and difficult to use.

It is very easy to make a mess of the default layout causing it to be nearly impossible to re-instate the default options. I think the following should be addressed.

1. Have a reset to default conditions option for the theme layout. In the event of the theme being totally unusable at least the default behaviour can be restored.

2. the instructions to drag a content item to the column are not clear. You can't drag a content item to the column layout.

3. re-arranging the column headers in the mail kmail window does not save the view once you exit kmail. This is a regression against the previous version and takes us back to the kde 2.X days when this behaviour was the default.

I agree that it takes some time to find out how that configuration dialog works. At first I thought one can drag those text content items to create new columns.

I can confirm point 3 of the bug reporter, the column order is not saved whereas the content is.

Point 1 would be nice.

An "apply" button would also be nice to see how my configuration will look like in the real message list - without having to click "OK" and to reopen the dialog if it doesn't look like supposed to be.

One more issue: there is no way to bring back the "Message Group" item once it was removed.

Rearranging column headers in "Configure themes" also don't work at all.

Point 3 is an already known bug 178154.

The other points are still valid in kde 4.2.65.
Comment 5 Ronny Multrus 2009-05-15 17:49:55 UTC
This bug is still valid in KDE 4.2.3 and Qt 4.2.2 on Gentoo.

Confirmed, still having issue with 4.2.3 and Qt 4.5.1 on Gentoo

This still doesn't work on kde 4.3.4 and kmail 1.12.4.

This is nearly a year old now and there have been at least 3 releases of kde 4.X.

I can't believe that I am the only person who finds this usability issue a major problem.

For now, I'll have to stick to 3.5.10 with kdemod3 until this has been resolved.

"3. re-arranging the column headers in the mail kmail window does not save the view once you exit kmail. This is a regression against the previous version and takes us back to the kde 2.X days when this behaviour was the default." fixed in 4.10

"1. Have a reset to default conditions option for the theme layout. In the event of the theme being totally unusable at least the default behaviour can be restored."
now we can't modify default theme. => so not necessary to have a reset to default.

"An "apply" button would also be nice to see how my configuration will look like in the real message list - without having to click "OK" and to reopen the dialog if it doesn't look like supposed to be." Will look at to add it for 4.10

Don't know what "One more issue: there is no way to bring back the "Message Group" item once it was removed."
Message Group is used for ?

Thank you for taking the time to file a bug report.

KMail2 was released in 2011, and the entire code base went through significant changes. We are currently in the process of porting to Qt5 and KF5. It is unlikely that these bugs are still valid in KMail2.

We welcome you to try out KMail 2 with the KDE 4.14 release and give your feedback.
