Description Ronny Standtke 2009-01-28 22:07:06 UTC
Version: Unbekannt (using 4.2.00 (KDE 4.2.0), Kubuntu packages)
Compiler: cc
OS: Linux (i686) release 2.6.27-11-generic

In the systemsettings for kdm there is the tab "Background(3)". (No idea why there are numbers on the tab texts, but anyway...)
There is the radiobutton "Picture" with an empty combobox and an open file dialog icon.
When I use the open file dialog to select a picture nothing happens. This way it is impossible to set a background picture.

This bug is still present in KDE-4.2.2.

I have the same problem. There is a work-around though: selecting "diashow" and adding only one picture (the one I want to have) works fine. The only problem there is that after clicking "Ok" in the diashow set-up, the preview is wrong - it shows only a part of the picture (it looks like it didn't get scaled but cropped). After restarting the settings panel, the preview shows the correct picture until I enter and leave the set-up
window again.

This is KDE 4.2.2 from Kubuntu 9.04 RC.

While bug#151669 still makes it impossible for normal users to configure kdm, it looks like this bug is fixed now.

$ systemsettings --version
Qt: 4.5.0
KDE: 4.2.96 (KDE 4.2.96 (KDE 4.3 RC2))
Systemeinstellungen: 1.0
Comment 5 Ronny Standtke 2009-10-12 11:38:34 UTC
I updated to KDE-4.3.2 on Kubuntu-9.04 and the bug is there again.
Comment 6 Oswald Buddenhagen 2009-10-12 12:29:55 UTC
are you sure that this isn't bug 202799 in fact?
Comment 7 Ronny Standtke 2009-10-12 15:21:45 UTC
I am sure that it is exactly this bug.
Comment 8 Oswald Buddenhagen 2009-10-12 21:47:13 UTC
ok, marking it as dupe then (your later report has a more accurate description of the problem, so it "wins").

Comment 9 Ronny Standtke 2009-10-12 22:24:05 UTC
Sorry, you misunderstood. By "I am sure that it is exactly this bug." I meant that is is not a duplicate of bug 202799 but exactly *this* bug (182206). Reopening.
Comment 10 Oswald Buddenhagen 2009-10-13 22:08:48 UTC
hmpf. works just fine here. i suppose config/kdm/backgroundrc is not changed as it should be?
Comment 11 Ronny Standtke 2009-10-15 10:24:41 UTC
> hmpf. works just fine here.

You can reproduce the issue by installing Kubuntu-9.10 Beta. The nice thing in Linuxland is that all the different distributions not only have a different feature set but also every distribution has its own set of bugs. Maybe this issue is specific to Kubuntu?
Comment 12 Oswald Buddenhagen 2009-10-15 13:36:55 UTC
hmm, ok, then let's assume it's kubuntu's problem. please file a bug with them (unless it's already reported, otherwise just refer to this report). i'm sure someone will reopen if downstream identifies it as upstream after all. :)
Comment 13 Ronny Standtke 2009-10-16 10:48:58 UTC
OK, I reported it downstream:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/kdebase-workspace/+bug/452883
Comment 14 Jonathan Thomas 2009-10-16 14:54:17 UTC
We aren't patching anything in the user interface that should make the file dialog not appear when the open file button is clicked. Judging this as a downstream bug would really be premature at this point.
Comment 15 Ronny Standtke 2009-10-16 15:56:56 UTC
It's not the file dialog that does not appear, its the picture selection that does not work.
Comment 16 Jonathan Thomas 2009-10-16 16:07:50 UTC
We provide a default theme, but that's about the extent of what we do, and configuration should work as long as it works upstream. But considering that until recently configuring GUI style and fonts were broken, it's not that much of a stretch to think that this could be broken too.
Comment 17 Ronny Standtke 2009-10-16 16:11:58 UTC
Here is a short demo video showing the problem:

Comment 18 Unknown 2009-11-14 10:38:18 UTC
I still have the same issue with KDE 4.3.2 (Kubuntu)
Comment 19 Ronny Standtke 2010-02-15 13:51:33 UTC
I just tested with KDE 4.4 and it works again. Let's see how long. ;-)
