Description Jeffrey 2009-01-26 18:22:51 UTC
Version: 1.9.9 (using KDE 3.5.9)
OS: Linux
Installed from: Debian testing/unstable Packages

I find the Search/Filter bar extremely useful but also limiting; I would love to see it incorporate the filtering that Amarok (1.4.x and 2.0.x) uses.

Currently if I filter by, say, 'W0016581' it will not bring up something that has the subject line '[ W0016581]' (same string but with brackets), but I think that it definitly should. Additionally in Amarok I can search for:
'bill ow'
and I'd get results like:
'bill brewer - brown and out'
'bill owch - oh the pain'
'last nights ever - billingtown'

Amarok's filter capabilities extend not just to the Artist / Album but also to track titles as well, meaning I get more accurate results if I cannot remember an album but I know the artist is something like 'Own My Boat' and the title is "bill me later" -- 'bill ow' would have returned that track, regardless of the position of those strings in this metadata.

I think the ideal filter would default to just search subject/to/from entries but that it could be changed to also filter through all of the current folder (or perhaps the whole email account).

Maybe this is just too much however, as Amarok (2.x) uses a MySQL database and I don't think KMail has this option (nor should it imho).

Just a thought which may be incorporated into the KDE4 version, not sure. Thanks for the great application!

In kmail 1.11.0 (kde 4.2) you could filter by W0016581 and get the mail with the subject line [W0016581].
The full search dialog has the ability to do several matches in several parts of the mail.
Also, the full search dialog has the ability to do regular expresion searches in all the mail.
I think this equals the search abilities of Amarok 2.

I agree that the full search feature is powerful, but I want the filter to be powerful also, so that a string separated by spaces in the filter:
Filter: W0016581 bill
wouldn't need to be in that order in the Subject line (i.e., wouldn't need to be the exact string that I typed "W0016581 bill"), and that that info may also be found in the To/From/CC fields also.

So my result may be that the Subject contains W0016581 and a recipient contains bill@bozo.com and not just when there is a name attached to an email address (like "Bill <bill@bozo.com>").

Just a wish but I'd love to see it.

I've created a Wish item for Amarok to create the filter as an external library, I am not sure if this helps or not but I think it would.

Thank you for your feature request. Kmail1 is currently unmaintained so we are closing all wishes. Please feel free to reopen a feature request for Kmail2 if it has not already been implemented.
Thank you for your understanding.

Instead of creating a new feature request, please confirm here if the wishlist is still valid for kmail2.
