Description Maciej Pilichowski 2009-01-18 15:57:12 UTC
Version:            (using 4.1.3)
Installed from:    Debian testing/unstable Packages

errors: show error in one place

Currently okular shows error in two places, with two _different_ messages -- in tooltip near top of the window, and in center in dialog. This is real usability abuse, please make it consistent and show appropriate info.

For example (I mean, bad example):
* dialog says -- error while opening the file
* tooltip says -- unrar is missing

Please, make it one message for the user.

Not a bug, both things are true and not contradictory, if the user gets confused by two complementary error messages they have bigger problems

Oh, now I see -- it is actually a nice feature.

This way, user could read one message using his/her left eye, and the second message using his/her second eye. After that user would compare the messages if they are contradictory or complementary (the purpose of the matching could be explained in the documentation). After several such trials, user could get to the point it is much more efficient to read screen as a whole, and concurrently perform string semantic matching. New skill thanks to Okular.

I believe this is on "easy game mode". What about "expert mode"? The third message could flow from right to left, the fourth from top to bottom, and the fifth could blink in random places. Now, some messages could be contradictory and some complementary.

This way okular would force user to:
a) actually read all messages
b) do message comparison
c) marvel complexity of programming (all 5 messages for some lousy error)

I am all for it! The more obstacles, the better. UI should be painful, otherwise user would not appreciate developers work.

Your message is very welcome sir, please keep your constructive criticism coming, it helps us a lot to improve our software.

Great software takes open mind, not open source.

The problem is not with messages but placement. Imagine older person, with reading problems. Not she/he has to hurry up and read the message (which one?) before it disappears, if it does, she/he has to recreate the problem to read the message again. Then she/he has to compare messages.

The obvious question is -- for what AIM is such struggle?

Normal person see this as a problem, there is no UI/design textbook on earth that would recommend scattered messages (with timeouts!) as productive UI/design, quite contrary. Yet, instead of taking approach for making life easier for users, it is just another case, where excuses are built, why such design is for user benefit.

Thanks to such UI there is only effort:
* reading fast
* re-executing okular
* making sure the messages are consistent

So I am all ears, what is the benefit?

There's no way to discuss with you, because you always have the truth, so any discussion leads to you ridiculizing, patronizing, ironizing, making fun of the other and basically trying to destroy any self steem the other person might have to make your point the winner.

Please stop posting bug reports and wishes to Okular, i know your intentions are good, but it has been impossible for all of us to work with you and all you do is keep insisting, resulting in our team shrinking and shrinking because noone is able to work with you.

You, you, you, you... This is personal bug tracker, or software one? (please, don't answer).

> Please stop posting bug reports and wishes to Okular,

Done (please remind me of this, if I forgot).
