Compiler:          KUbuntu 8.10 distro 
OS:                Linux
Installed from:    Ubuntu Packages

Hi,

I've this hardware : 

C2D 6420, Geforce 8800GTX, 4GB of RAM.

I've the 177 version of nvidia drivers installed and running(green light in jokey)

When I enable Desktop effect in KDE (compositing = true in kwinrc), I get the following : 

Mouse pointer in the correct direction, but rest of the screen is upside down with some windows not in the screen (you can see part of it in the corner)

this lead to a crash, with the details below.

On the very first time I tryed (maybe with no nvidia drivers), I was able to see shadow of windows, but not the window content itself.
With XRender, it seems to works in first place, but after a while, it shows some unstability.

Kubuntu 8.10 does not yet include the KWin self-tests of KWin 4.2. You could try changing some of the advanced settings.

Hi,

I'm willing to help, but I don't know how to install debug package and make the system use them (and eventually revert back to normal package to run a normal kubuntu so my system is useable without Desktop Effect).

I did not see -dbg pacakge of KDE in aptitude... if you could paste apt-get or aptitude commande line to do so, I will.

Also, as it's KDE that goes mad and not a specific app, tell me how is it possible to use gdb or valgrind on this matter.

Could you be more precise ?  which advanced settings ?  where ? (I've taken a look inside KDE setting, advanced tab, but didn't found anything relevant.)

In kubuntu you have to install the kdebase-workspace-dbg package.

You find the advanced settings of KWin Compositing via kickoff->systemsettings->desktop->desktop effects->general tab -> advanced settings button.

I'm sorry, I won't give it  a try... it seems too risky for me. I need my pc to work, and instruction  to help you are far too tiny to be safe. 3D effects are really an extra I can spare.

Yes, by giving detailed instruction on how to go on debug, collect data, revert back to normal mode.

I'm willing to help, but not if it means a possible loss of my work station.
(Installing 680MB of software is a bit scary for my pc I work with every day)

with comment #1 and #3 everything is said. I'm sorry I can't provide a more detailed instruction. As said you only need to install kdebase-workspace-dbg and the depending packages. Then do the steps to produce the crash and we will have a nice backtrace with debugging symbols.

Hi,

  I've retryed Desktop effect. At first it seems to works. I reboot and on after login, same issues : screen upside down, doesn't fit on the screen... 

  I've tryed to make it crash without success. I did : CTRL+ALT+BACKSPACE to restart X server. same result after login, but alt tab works, but when I release ALT key, I can't see the app i've selected. I was able to see a divx running (that I launch without willing to) while having ALT pressed.

I've done CTRL+ALT+F1 then, CTRL+ALT+F7 and then it crashes with this stack :

Please disable the blur effect and try again. Btw the crash actually happens in the driver, so perhaps the new 180 driver helps.

How can I update 180 drivers before it is generally available ? (which url should I add in /etc/apt/sources.list)

Sorry I have no idea. I'm still using the 177 driver and I won't update the driver. I wait till it's integrated into the distribution and that will be in case of ubuntu 9.04. But I think there was envy which can be used to install new drivers in ubuntu?
