Description Elmar Stellnberger (AT/K) 2008-12-08 01:38:26 UTC
Version: 1.6.3 (using 3.5.9 "release 49.1" , openSUSE 11.0)
Compiler: Target: x86_64-suse-linux
OS: Linux (x86_64) release 2.6.25.18-0.2-xen

Using koffice-wordprocessing-1.6.3-157.1 I get a totally wrong page size for A4 pages which has not been the case in previous versions of this program.
Comment 1 Thomas Zander 2008-12-21 00:32:44 UTC
Can not reproduce and koffice has not been changed for quite some time. Maybe its suse specific?
Comment 2 Elmar Stellnberger (AT/K) 2009-02-14 10:44:44 UTC
It is the same under FreeBSD 7.1. No distro specific problem.
Comment 3 Thomas Zander 2009-02-14 23:42:45 UTC
If you reopen a but closed as "worksforme" I'd have to be able to reproduce it ;) So could you please give me a step-by-step explanation of what you do and a "I expected" and a "I got instead" kind of report?
That would greatly help with reproducing this.
Comment 4 Elmar Stellnberger (AT/K) 2009-02-15 16:39:24 UTC
1. start kword
2. select 'blank document'
A new page appears that seems to be landscape format.
However if I try to adjust the page format at Format->Page Layout the page is stated to already be in upright format. If you again select landscape format an even more squenched page that is not usable at all appears.

I don't understand how such a fatal bug can stay unencountered and uncomplained for such a long time. Simply incredible. That way kword is not usable at all. Please fix it as soon as possible! It can't be the way that this does not appear at you at all; or can it?
Comment 6 Thomas Zander 2009-02-15 17:15:49 UTC
Indeed, it works just as expected here. And as you say its quite unbelievable that it goes undetected for so long (the version you report against has been out for years). Its much more likely its not a KOffice bug but something else. Unfortunately we can't help there. :(

Closing as 'worksforme'
Comment 7 Elmar Stellnberger (AT/K) 2009-02-15 17:22:26 UTC
In times of Suse10.1 this has worked very well. It is definitely a bug of koffice since the old version installed in a chroot container still works as desired. Please have a look at elder versions of KWord. Your program will otherwise not be usable for 98% of all prospective users.
Comment 8 Thomas Zander 2009-02-15 18:11:04 UTC
Please don't reopen my bugs.
I see your frustration, but reopening doesn't change the situation.
Comment 9 Elmar Stellnberger (AT/K) 2009-02-15 18:18:19 UTC
Why don't you have a look on what is going wrong here?
It will be crucial for the acceptance of Kword.
Does it make sense to develop an application that simply can not be used?

.
Comment 11 Thomas Zander 2009-02-15 18:24:27 UTC
Please understand that the application is broken for you but not for others. Its probably a local problem (did you try it with a clean user?). I'm sorry that this is causing you problems.
Comment 12 Elmar Stellnberger (AT/K) 2009-02-15 18:35:07 UTC
The application is broken for different operating systems and distributions (Suse/Debian Linux, FreeBSD, ...) using a plain and empty user account. Do not think that other people do not encounter this problem just because they do not complain about it! Most people simply have used Kword for the last time encountering such a crucial failure!
Comment 13 Elmar Stellnberger (AT/K) 2009-02-15 18:35:35 UTC
Please leave this as wontfix if you won't fix it.
Comment 14 Elmar Stellnberger (AT/K) 2009-02-21 18:52:38 UTC
confirmed for debian/lenny
Comment 15 Elmar Stellnberger (AT/K) 2009-02-21 19:00:32 UTC
Even entering the page size manually does not help. It will always display a page which is more broad than high.
Comment 16 Thomas Zander 2009-02-27 23:30:10 UTC
I'm suspecting a X11 configuration error;
xdpyinfo | grep resolution
will show something weird.

But, yeah, not a KWord bug. Please, for the last time, don't reopen my bugs.
Comment 17 Elmar Stellnberger (AT/K) 2009-03-01 11:07:30 UTC
Great Thanks!! In deed, that`s it.
> xdpyinfo | grep resolution
  resolution: 176x87 dots per inch
I will report this upstream.
Wouldn`t have thought that this could be the bug of an external utility/library.
KWord is a neat and small word processing utility, which I like very much.

upstream bug: https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=20409
Comment 19 Elmar Stellnberger (AT/K) 2009-03-24 10:30:30 UTC
now fixed upstream (xorg-x11-server-7.4-17.4.1).
However it remains a question whether it really makes sense to scale the underlying page to the values returned by xdpyinfo while fonts and bitmaps stay unadjusted.
