Description rad ayeda 2008-12-04 08:27:08 UTC
Version: (using Devel)
OS: Linux
Installed from: Compiled sources

One thing i noticed about KDE is the poor UI layout. Yes in general, it's good already but when you look at it closely there are certain things that really annoy me. Take for instance, the Okular with its ugly sidebar and the Dolphin with its unbalanced elements, etc. Here i will only deal with Dolphin. Aside from oversized information panel( you can't even resize it) and the annoying autoresizing of the icons once you resize the places panel( i really want to have control as to what size the icons on panel would be regardless of the size of the panel they're on), there's a single thing which I am the only who seems to notice.. it's the placement/alignment of the header widget of the panels. i really don't how to explain it but here are screenshot samples taken with a skulpture and bespin theme styles. http://i262.photobucket.com/albums/ii114...bespin.jpg and http://i262.photobucket.com/albums/ii114...lpture.png

you notice the red line does not align with the base/bottom of the header of the places panel? it makes the header look out of place because it is a bit displaced upward. It should have been better and cleaner if the top part of where the directories are placed(i don't how to call it) is aligned with the base of the panel header. i think it's very clear in the screenshots as to what i am talking about. I don't know if it's just me, but it's kind of really annoying to me and it gets in my way.. my suggestion is to heighten up the header..

thank you!

Note: This request is originally from this (http://forum.kde.org/kde-ui-layout-t-17979.html) thread by frustphil in KDE forums. I think he has a point and I second to this as an artist's point of view. It's very minor but I think it will improve Dolphin greatly.

Thanks for the suggestions, but there is nothing I can do to fix the issues you
show in the Bespin screenshots: The height of the dock headers are defined by
the style (= Bespin) and Dolphin has no influence in this. But I agree that the
placement should be in line with the URL navigator.

Regarding the Information Panel: You can resize it. What do you miss here?
Places Panel: This would be a separate wish that has to be applied to kdelibs
(the places panel is not Dolphin specific).

So I'm unsure how to proceed with this bugreport: For the Bespin issue I
suggest to submit a report to the Bespin style. For the Places Panel I can
reassign this wish to kdelibs, the point with the Information Panel is unclear
for me.

Oh i see..
Information Panel: Here's a paraphrase from the author.. 'Last time I checked you can't squeeze it in the same fashion as the places panel.. You can only make it bigger from its default size, not the other way around. And things get horrible when you attached it under the places panel because because it overrides the behavior of the places panel.'

Places Panel: Does it mean I won't have to file a separate wishlist? If so, I would appreciate it very much if you'll include the information panel.

Thank you so much for the quick reply...

Regarding the Information Panel and the authors comment: I cannot reproduce this issue. I'd please need more information what is meant with "things get horrible". I don't know what is meant with "... it overrides the behavior of the places panel".

Places panel: I'm very sure the wish has already been submitted, but I could not find the bug ID (the bug is assigned to kdelibs). From my point of view there is no need adding a separate wish for this.

Anyhow I'd need please more information regarding the Information Panel issue. There have been submitted some bugs for the information panel, but to be sure whether this wish is a duplicate more infos are required. Thanks!
