I often start a secure network session via the SSH functionality in KDM.  I connect to my main computer from my laptop.

Using the laptop's volume-control keys sometimes causes KMix to crash.

It doesn't do it all the time.  As far as I can tell, it happens if someone is also logged on to the remote computer directly, with a different account from the one you are using.  Otherwise, the volume is changed correctly. (Of course, it only affects the volume on the remote computer, as SSH only tunnels the graphical output of apps, not their audio.)
