Version: (using KDE 4.1.3) OS: Linux Installed from: SuSE RPMs Whenever I open kontact, kmail, or openoffice, the window opens initially at the top left of the screen (taking approximately 1/4 of the screen) and instantly resizes (to the selected size when last used, that is bigger) while opening. This resize is actually very slow, about a second or two, meaning that I have a big chunk of gray (the oxygen gray) taking up the rest of my screen while the content of the window is being painted. This happens also on my wife's laptop.
There is unfortunately nothing that can be done about this due to the way X works.
My bad, I was thinking of something similar but different. The slow resize is due to both driver problems (Do both of your test systems nVidia by any chance?) and CPU load when the application starts. I'll move this to KMail to see if they can do anything about resizing the window before it is displayed.
Yes, right on spot. I do have a nvidia on both systems. A Geforce Go7300 and the infamous Geforce 8400M GS. I thought it might be related to that. But I was also hoping the problem was something else as NVIDIA is not particularly quick in fixing performance issues (to say the least). What puzzles me though is that it doesn't happen with dolphin, konqueror or system-settings. I tried to change the special apps settings and apply initially a certain size, but it didn't work. That's what led me originally to hope that the problem wasn't Nvidia related.
Changing the subject line of this bug to describe the issue that *can* be fixed in KMail, and reassigning to KMail devs since this bug report contains enough detail to fix. Basiaclly, the main window should resize to the size it was last used at *before* it is made visible on startup. That way the slow resize issue shouldn't happen in this case. Unfortunately the slow resize issue will probably need to be fixed upstream by nvidia :(
I don’t have this issue with KDEPIM 4.6 beta5
Fixed in KMail2.
