Description Clive 2008-11-09 19:25:54 UTC
Version: KNotes 3.6 (using KDE 3.5.9, release 49.1 and OpenSuSE 11.0) (using KDE 3.5.9)
OS: Linux
Installed from: SuSE RPMs

Hi, Knotes programmers:

First, let me say that I probably wouldn't be making up a wishlist like this unless I thought, which I do, that Knotes is one of the most useful little programs I know.

For instance, it doesn't take up a lot of space, so one can use it to take down notes about other programs you may be studying, or, as I have done, take notes about an illustration or photograph that occupies the rest of the screen.

But here are some changes I would like to see, if you think they might coincide with your own objectives:

When I have already saved a Knote to a file, I would like to then be able to just "Save" it after any further changes I have made to it (rather than having to go through the "Save As" routine). Preferably I would like to do this with a key shortcut.

I like very much being able to change the directory I save or print a file to and retain this setting for future use. And also I like being able to have the Knotes icon in the left panel of this dialogue. But the software seems unstable here, and sometimes the icon disappears or sometimes the directory changes back to the default. This causes a lot of extra work.

Where do the Knotes go ordinarily when you log out. I know there is a directory, ~/.kde/share/apps/knotes/notes where files appear corresponding to each of the knotes I have created, but they all appear to be empty, and, instead, seem to be linked by number to some other place.

Therefore, how can I back them up, when I am contemplating installing a whole new Linux version, for example, against the possibility of a hard-drive crash?

There is also the fact that one can't manage them like this, that is, delete all the empty notes, for instance.

I wish that I could somehow delete, by one keystroke, all empty notes I have created in the course of experimenting with KNotes. In fact, when there are a lot of empty notes, one can't even delete all the empties in Kontact. There always seem to be empty notes left over in the Knote screen.

Having a lot of Knotes seems to slow down boot up into the Desktop appreciably. So it would be useful to be able to easily store them in a directory of your own choosing. And then delete them from the Knotes screen.

I would like to actually be able to stick Knotes to an icon or program or file so that I could leave a reminder of some point or other that I don't want to forget. Most programs don't provide adequate means for leaving such notes.

I wish one could append one knote to another (or to others), or "clip" them together (into a booklet).

I wish one could create an index of one's knotes with headings and subheadings.

A Search feature could be quite useful.

Perhaps one wouldn't want to add too many features, as this might interfere with knotes' space-saving economy, but possibly different panels might be useful, so you could create a table of contents, and make comparisons.

But it's, of course, important to keep Knotes lightweight.

What do you think?

Happy programming.

Thanks Clive for your report but next time remember to post ONE report for each wish. Now it is very difficult to track all the suggestions.

Going to your requests:

0) backup of knotes: not yet requested, please open a new wish for it
1) many notes = slowliness: bug #192562
2) stick notes to files/programs: bug #198655
3) clip notes (merge notes): like point `0'
4) notes index: like point `0'
5) search has been implemented, but sometimes it crashes (there is bug report for this issue too)
6) delete empty notes: like point `0' :-)

About the "save" feature I don't agree: when you "save as" a note, you make a copy of it and the note doesn't remember where you've saved it, so a "save" action doesn't have any sense: a note is not like a text document which you open, edit and save.

You could give a try to kjots, a handy notebook, it doesn't display "post it" like notes, but you can manage a lot of notes together.

"I like very much being able to change the directory I save or print a file to
and retain this setting for future use."

I agree this would be a good feature because notes could then be synchronised between computers, for example over the Internet using Dropbox or manually using a USB memory stick.

"I wish one could create an index of one's knotes with headings and subheadings."

I agree this would be useful.
