(*** This bug was imported into bugs.kde.org ***) Package: kghostview Version: 2.0 mandrake Severity: normal Installed from: mandrake rpms intuitively page up/down are used to view more text. but in kghostview they flip pages... regardless of whether you've seen the whole of a page or not. correct behavior would be to scroll to the bottom of the page then go to the top of the next page etcetera (submitted via bugs.kde.org)
This bug says that PgUp/PgDn should be for half pages. That's not the way other programs with similar tasks (gv and kdvi) work. Acroread does work like this, but I think PgUp should scroll a page up and not a screen. The spacebar scrolls down a screen in kghostview.
the important thing is that page-oriented viewing be preserved. It wouldn't work particularly well to emulate word-processor layout for a document that's say, 2-up landscape. too confusing... intuitively, for viewing prepress formats such as PDF, one wants pgdn to move onto the next page worth of text, which may hit a page boundary, in which case it would align the bottom of the page with the bottom of the window and actually move the viewport less than a full page. moving by whole pages, regardless of the user has seen on the screen is sadistic.
upon re-reading comments from oever@fenk.wau.nl, i must add that SPACEBAR IS AN AWFULLY NON-INTUITIVE SCROLLING KEY.... why? 1. across apps, keys ought to do roughly the same things. spacebar is usually for typing. 2. directional movement keys come in pairs. that are close to one another for simpler navigation. left-right up-down page-up-page-down. the spacebar has no obvious opposite... ...(space backspace you propose?)... ...that can be easily typed with the same hand.
Actually, I think this bug can be closed, the behaviour has been changed completely in CVS of March 2003.
in branch, or head, or both? I see this error as well with 3.1.1a. IMHO, it should be fixed in branch as well.
In what way has the behavior been changed? I think that it's very important to maintain consistency with the behavior of kdvi. As for the space bar for scrolling, kdvi also uses this. At least in the version of kghostview i have (in KDE 3.0.5a), scroll down uses space bar to scroll down while scroll up uses shift+space. Kdvi is going to be implementing shift+space for scrolling up to match kghostview's behavior. (See bug 58826.) So, i hope that this hasn't all been undone.
Please indicate how the behavior has been changed. The following programs have been found to use the spacebar to scroll down: Mozilla, Konqueror, KDVI, and Ghostview. If KGhostView does not implement the spacebar to scroll down, then it will have non-standard behavior.
Bug 61028 now requests space/shift+space scrolling be added to the KDE HIG.
scroll down behaves like page down, i.e jumps to the end of the next page (scroll up works correctly) BTW - please implement icons for scrolling - novice users will NOT find the space/shift space shortcuts to scroll
This bug has become a discussion of a lot of diferent things. However, taking the original bug ("PgDown" changes pages), I am not going to fix it. It changes pages and will do so for some time. Therefore, I am closing this as WONTFIX. If there are any bugs in the keyboard handling (there might be - keyboard handling needs to be re-factored), then, please, open a specific limited bug report luis
