Version: (using KDE 4.1.2) Installed from: Ubuntu Packages Tab marker is a double arrow, but in French a double arrow is used to quote, so it's very confusing because there's no difference between a tab marker and a real double arrow character in beginning of a line. Example: » tab marker » real character in the text Tab marker would not be a character often used in text writing.
the color is different. do you think a "|->" would be better instead of ">>" ?
The color is different but the difference is very subtle (black and gray) when it affects just 1 or 2 characters. What do you mean by "|->"? Can you put real characters or a screen shot?
Created attachment 28209 [details] Tab marker and real double arrow The first line of the screen shot is a tab marker. The second line is a real double arrow. It's very confusing.
You can change the color. Settings > Configure Kate > Fonts & Colors, then Tab and Space markers. Attached some other ideas of how to represent a tab. Ideas are of course welcome.

Also note: you can disable the visualization: Editing > [ ] Highlight Tabulators
Yes, I can disable the visualization but it's very useful. I want to keep it. I took back your propositions and I added some. See the attached image. What about the line 4? It's a symbol often used in keyboards to represent tab in the key. And what about the line 5? It seems to me that it was the way to represent tabs in KDE3. Besides, why has it changed? About the line 2, I'm not sure because it's a character that can be found relatively often in a text. Personally, I would prefer a less used character.
Created attachment 28212 [details] All the propositions hitherto
I write here all the propositions: » (00BB) right-pointing double angle quotation mark → (2192) rightwards arrow ↦ (21A6) rightwards arrow from bar ⇥ (21E5) rightwards arrow to bar ⌞ (231E) bottom left corner
Ok, we cannot use the utf8 characters though, as not all fonts provide them. So we have to draw them ourselves. The last item has only 2 lines, ie it's the fastest to draw. Is there any preference which character we should draw now?
Personally, it would be one of the two last: ⇥ (21E5) because it's very similar to the symbol in the tab key in most of keyboards. ⌞ (231E) because it's unobtrusive and similar to the tab symbol used in KDE3.
Dear user, this wish list item is now closed, as it wasn't touched in the last two years and no contributor stepped up to implement it. The Kate/KTextEditor team is very small and we can just try to keep up with fixing bugs. Therefore wishs that show no activity for two years or more will be closed from now on to keep at least a bit overview about 'current' wishs of the users. If you want your feature to be implemented, please step up to provide some patch for it. If you think it is really needed, you can reopen your request, but keep in mind, if no new good arguments are made and no people get attracted to help out to implement it, it will expire in two years again. We have a nice website kate-editor.org that provides all the information needed to contribute, please make use of it. For highlighting improvements our user manual shows how to write syntax definition files. Greetings Christoph
