Description Johannes Vogel 2008-10-26 10:46:32 UTC
Version: 1.9.10 (using KDE 4.0.5)
Compiler: .. Kubuntu.. :-)
OS: Linux
Installed from: Ubuntu Packages

I'm using "Send queued messages" by right-clicking the outbox folder. I have there a message of 4.4 KB, no attachment, only a reply to a normal message. After a long time (~60 sec) there is a error message:

Sending failed
Unknown error code 50
The message content was not accepted.
The server responded: "smtp.hispeed.ch Lost connection to [my IP-Address]"
This is a temporary failure. You may try it again later.
Please send...

Sometimes (with other messages) it works fine.
I'm using TLS authentication on this SMTP server profile.
This failure occures since I reinstalled Kubuntu 8.10.

Thanks for any help solving this problem!

Does this always happen with this very specific message? From my point of view, this looks like a bug in the server, not in kmail. Afaict, there is no smpt error code 50, so that would be a misbehavior of the server. In any case, would it be possible to log the whole smtp transaction using wireshark? (make sure to remove any personal data if you do)

It always goes wrong with this specific message but also with some others. Often it happens when they have a bigger file (~500 KB) attached. I can repeat the Sending Queued Message command (over days) but the error always appears. I can delete such a message or move the message to an other folder and can try other messages which sometimes do work. First I thought it's because of the attachments, but in this case the error appears in this 4.4 KB file too.

hispeed.ch is one of the biggest provider here in Switzerland and it has usually worked with Thunderbird and others under Windows and Linux.
Comment 4 Johannes Vogel 2008-10-27 23:20:15 UTC
I had a message which didn't send out. Then I removed the attachment and it went successfully. Didn't change the text nor anything else but only deleted the attachment (m$ word file, 707KB)...
Comment 5 George Kiagiadakis 2008-10-28 10:37:18 UTC
Hmm, I forgot that TLS is encrypted, so that log doesn't help so much... Now that I think of it, that could also be a bug in kmail's TLS implementation. Does this server offer any other options (SSL maybe)? If so, can you try with SSL to see if it works?

Also, it might be useful to see this specific message itself. Would it be possible to attach this here too? (you can change email addresses and other confidential data that appear in the headers and/or the text, if you like)
Comment 6 Johannes Vogel 2008-10-28 12:16:07 UTC
Sorry, I cannot attach this message because it is confidential.

I tried to set the encryption to none and it worked! How can I help to solve the TLS implementation bug? Maybe I find other (small) messages which wouldn't work. I will attach them here. If it doesn't work, now I know a way to send the messages out. Jupii :-)

I know there are a lot of changes in KDE which might be related to this. If you can try with KDE 4.3.0 beta or wait for the final 4.3.0 and update this report, that would be great.
