This may be related to bug 165485.
Can you still reproduce this bug with a recent KDE version (4.1.3 / 4.2beta1 / 4.2svn) If you can, this occurs with every FTP site or with a specific site ?

I'm having the same cash with KDE 4.1.3 from Fedora 10.

I have 17 shortcuts in my "Open a file" window. 4 of them are ftp shortcuts.
I can add additional non-ftp shortcuts without problem, but when I try to add a new ftp-shortcut, kate crashes...

Oops, sorry for not noticing that you were using KDE 4.1.3 already in backtrace in comment 1 .
Can you please install the debug enabled packages in your system and then post the full backtrace of this bug again? (so we have more info in order to determinate if this is a duplicate)
Since you're using FC10, you would have to look at http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/StackTraces (basically , install kdelibs-debuginfo and qt-debuginfo )

I don't understand why your asking for more debug information. I thought my second post was the full stacktrace (produced under Fedora 9 - Kde 4.1.3 at the time) ?

The second post doesn't have a FULL backtrace. A FULL backtrace includes the source code file and the line number of each function call. (so it's the most efficient way to determine where the bug occurred).
In Fedora Core 10 you have to install the "kdelibs-debuginfo" and "qt-debuginfo" packages.

Now you have posted the full backtrace :), I can determine this bug doesn't seem to be a duplicate of another bug.
Now I request more info to you :P : Have you tested with a lot of FTP sites, or the application crashes with an specific FTP site? If it's an unique FTP site, can you access that site using Dolphin or Konqueror to list its content. ?

Well, I can open/write/save the destination in Kate, and work with files... But I can't add a bookmark to this FTP location.

It look's like I don't have the same problem with all FTP destination. 
I don't know what could make a difference. Do you have some additional test I could make ?

May be you can try using KDE ftp (ftp://ftp.kde.org) , browsing to some folder, and trying to add it to the place panel.

I can't browse through ftp.kde.org right now. It may be due to the fact I am behind a proxy. I'll try out when I'm back home.

I've tried to add ftp://ftp.kde.org/ to my bookmarks. It worked fine.

So, the bug may be related to the FTP site that does crash when adding it to the Places Panel. Maybe KIO can't read some attributes about it. (maybe related to bug 170927)

The crash was due to mimetype being NULL in KFilePlacesModel::dropMimeData (thanks for the backtrace in comment #9!).

There is a null check nowadays in that code (in the 4.2.x branch and in trunk), so this precise crash cannot happen anymore.

I consider this bug fixed (in KDE >= 4.2.0), please reopen only if it still happens in KDE-4.2.x or later.
