Description Giovanni M. 2008-10-14 20:18:01 UTC
Version: 2.0 (using Devel)
OS: Linux
Installed from: Compiled sources

With KDE3, the program "kfind" is integrated into konqueror, so I can search some pictures matching the filter, for example, "*kde*.*" and immediately see the preview of these files, very useful!
With KDE4, the program kfind runs only on its own window and the only way to view the results it's only with a detailed list, no more files preview.
It's not a terrible lack or I'm missing something? an option to set the preferred view mode in kfind4 would make me happy...

Will discuss this with Peter. If he's happy to have kfind integrated into Dolphin, I'll assign this to myself :)

AFAIK the longterm plan is to find a replacement for KFind, so that something like Macs Spotlight will be integrated into KDE. Also with new Strigi slaves the integration of KFind would get obsolete, it would be enough for finding a useful way to integrate the Strigi slaves as nice UI. From my gut feeling we should have something like this in KDE 4.3... I've set the wish to NEW, as I think a kind of search integration must be done.

konqueror plus kfind in KDE3

what can I do now in KDE3 and not in KDE4
Comment 4 Giovanni M. 2008-10-16 11:29:29 UTC
That's great, thank you for your attention.
If I can, I do not think that Strigi can make obsolete kfind because with kfind I can move freely in my filesystem starting from the root "/", so I can easily do searchs for files in both local and remote filesystem in a transparent manner. With Strigi I think that I will be forced to start indexing from "/" before I can get the same functionality...

I do not know if I was good at explain, attached an example of what can I do now with the KDE3 and not with the KDE4...

Best Regards

I'm sorry... first comment 4 then comment 3...

I had an illumination!
and if you add the capability of using regular expressions (if already not) and the option "filter in subfolders too and please show me the results" to the filter bar (ctrl+I) already present in dolphin? :O

Thanks Giovanni for the suggestions! But the main problem is not the user interface (e. g. whether the searching is integrated in the filterbar or as embedded dialog like in KDE3 etc.), but which technology is used for doing the search. When using Nepomuk it's also possible just searching from a specific directory or just searching by filenames instead of content. But in opposite to kfind it would take only very less time to iterate through hundreds of sub directories.

But there are still some things missing yet to be able making a nice user interface, so that kfind can be replaced completely. So integrating kfind to Dolphin would be quite a short term solution: the feature freeze for KDE 4.2 has started and we'd have to postpone this to 4.2, where Nepomuk is matured enough for replacing kfind.

thanks for the clear and timely explanation.

Just installed kde 4.6 and I can see that my wish has been fully satisfied.
Thank you.

Great to hear, thanks for testing the current beta!
