Description Axel Winter 2008-10-07 08:29:49 UTC
Version: 0.5 (using KDE 4.1.2)
Compiler: cc
OS: Linux
Installed from: Ubuntu Packages

My system Kubuntu 8.10 Beta on Dell D630 with GMA 965 Intel Chip Set.

Krandr recognizes correctly an external monitor.
It uses automatically the clone mode with LCD and VGA in the right maximum resolution.

Defining Extended Screen in Krandr does not work. It accepts the changes, but nothing happens.

Adding manually the "Virtual" setting into xorg.conf
Does NOT change anything for Krandr. It still can not initiated a dual monitor mode.

Even worse, the external monitor flickers all few seconds (it looks like xserver or randr is checking the external monitor).

Using XRANDR in the konsole works, however, the background image of the external monitor is gone. The KDE Starter Menu is gone and the monitor also refreshes every few seconds.

This is worse then kubuntu 8.04 :(

I am suffering from a slightly different problem but I believe they might be a result of the same bug. Basically, on my work machine with an ATI Radeon HD 2400 card with two 19" Dell LCD's connected, the Krandr/Display settings under KDE4 in Kubuntu 8.10 is unable to change the settings. When I click the "Identify Displays" button, it shows the DIV0/DIV1 box on both screens, which says to me that it isn't internally seeing them as separate devices to be configured. When I change a setting under either display, it affects them both. I am also unable to convince it to not use the "Cloned" mode. It always seems to reset back to it. I have a similar issue on my laptop when I connect my external monitor and my laptop has an Intel video chip. I'll test it again when I get home, but I do believe the laptop does have separate resolutions for each display.

I'm having the very same problem as Craig Magina is. Both monitors identify together (both labels on each monitor together) and it's impossible to set up the dual mode. (ASUS notebook with Intel 915GM graphic chipset).
I've spent lot of time trying to configure the xorg.conf manually, even trying to use the version I've had for a long time with KDE 3.x with no problems, and nothing was usable, even just to start the X was an unbeatable problem.
The flickering of the external monitor is really annoying. I've noticed, that it is regular, approx. 8 seconds on, 2 seconds off... Absolutely useless, should be marked as crash.

The same with my Thinkpad R61, Intel 3100 graphiccard on OpenSUSE 11.0, KDE 4.1.3, 1280x800 display and 1024x768 ext. screen or projector.
After adding "Virtual 1280 1568" manualy to xorg.conf it works with xrandr --output VGA --mode 1024x768 --pos 0x800
But with kdrandtray it's not possible to enter extended mode. It is possible to change the resolutions of the cloned screens.
If I could help by providing some additional information or test something, please let me know. Unfortunately I can't code but I would support where I can. This feature is really important for me for presentations, esp. when I want to show the usabiliy and power of Linux (and than it crashes or I have to scare the users away typing a view lines of code).

In a nutshell, the code for switching to a dual-monitor setup is partially implemented but disabled (because it would not quite work as is), and stuff that would be necessary for that is not implemented yet.

I'm going to hide the positioning controls for the time being - if someone wants to take a stab at making this work: it's all yours.

Thanks for your reponse. Now I know that's not a problem with my system. I'm looking forward to the implementation of this feature.

I have the same problem on Mandriva 2009. It is a nuisance!! I recently converted from windows to Mandriva and now I look like an idiot because my brand new Toshiba laptop can only use one screen.

When I DO attach an external monitor it displays the boot messages for Linux like a champion, but as soon as the X-Server starts the external monitor goes into 640X480 resolution. In KRandR this is the only resolution available in KRandR for the external monitor no matter what monitor/ projector I attach.

NOTHING I change in KRandR takes effect. I can change the properties to my heart's content. As soon as I apply it either crashes (depending on what I try to change), or it reverts back to its 640X480 resolution/ clone problem.

I need some help to fix this PLEASE!
Comment 7 Gustavo Pichorim Boiko 2008-12-04 17:19:03 UTC
Otto Saayman: if there is only one resolution being show, either the LCD and the external monitor have only one resolution in common, or the video driver is not reporting all the available resolutions correctly.

Can you please paste the contents of the command xrandr ?

Thanks in advance

In my case KrandR can set the resolution (or switching on/off) independently for any external/LCD display, as long as the image is the same (single screen?).
Howevere, LKrandR does not support virtual displays (Multiple screens).

I have an intel 95GM/GMS chipset.

This is fixed by sure by recent changes in 4.7 and in 4.8.

So I'm going to close this bug if it is still valid please report it.
