Description Xavier Brochard 2008-09-16 16:56:18 UTC
Version: 1.1 (using 4.1.1 (KDE 4.1.1), Debian packages)
Compiler: cc
OS: Linux (x86_64) release 2.6.26-1-amd64

May be this is attended behavior, but after typing something in filter bar, then clicking on a folder in places or in the main view, the filter bar is not reset.

It's disturbing as one doesn't realized what happened in this special case:
you filter on something, you do something with the document displayed, later you come back to Dolphin, click on a folder (in places or main view) and... the content of the folder looks strange!

I would also suggest that the content of filter bar should reset after some times if nothing happens in Dolphin.

I'm not sure, but wasn't this behaviour requested by users? :-)

The current behavior was requested. I'd suggest to change the severity to "wishlist", so that people can vote for this issue -> we get an impression whether the behavior should be changed...

Good idea Peter :-)
Comment 4 Xavier Brochard 2008-09-27 17:45:58 UTC
if it is intended behaviour, can you add options to configure it ?

Technically this won't be a problem, but I only want to make things configurable if I know why there is a problem for a user group with the current setting. So it would be great if you could explain the use-cases, where manually reseting the filterbar is no acceptable solution. Your example:

> you filter on something, you do something with the document displayed,
> later you come back to Dolphin, click on a folder (in places or
> main view) and... the content of the folder looks strange!

is no reason from my point of view for an additional setting. The right solution to solve this might be to make the filterbar more recognizable or maybe adding a color information to the view that it is filtered. Might this be an acceptable approach for you?

I will do some test case to be more clear. Might take some time before I complete the wish because I'm moving to a new home.

Thanks for your time and for keeping Dolphin simple by rejecting requests like mine ;-)

I'm back on the internet, sorry for being so late to complete this wish. I've done some tests and ask another user about that wish. Your suggestion to add an information to the view that it is filtered seems the right thing to do. I suggest to add "Filtered view [filter string]" on top of the view, like it is in the "Show in Groups" view.

So, mainly the problem is that an user could not see the current filter. The is filter placed on bottom, where is not "visible" enough, right?
Comment 9 Xavier Brochard 2008-11-04 18:20:46 UTC
It is not a problem of visibility, but a problem of concentration while working :-). It's a real case: a user set a filter to be more confortable while working in a folder. Some minutes later (after reading some documents, writing others, etc.) he goes to another folder and doesn't understand why all the content is not visible. He just forgot the filter. Is it better explained (I'm not very fluent in english)?

I would also said that adding a short line like "Filter to [filter string]" at top of the view, is a good feedback when one set a filter.

Yes, I agree that this is somewhat of an issue. I actually came accross this report while wanting to create a new one. Reading the comments above I have just realized that navigating the directories with the filter applied does work: you just have to use the breadcrumb widget at the top, which turns out to be quite nice: you can look for a pdf across lots of folders very quickly. It's just that somehow it isn't intuitive: I had to read this page to get the idea...

So I came here thinking it was irritating that the filer does not get reset on directory change, but now I think it is better that way. We just need to make the "feature" more discoverable, which brings me back to the other idea of a string somewhere at the top, which could possibly be something like "This view is filtered - you can change directories using the location bar".
I also think that changing the background color of the file pane when it is filtered is much more visible.

That said, for people who can't get used to the directories being filtered along, adding an option may still be appropriate.

Apparently, this got fixed. I have not tried 4.8.0 yet, but may ask what will be available?
In 4.7 as I have it right now, the filter is reset upon each directory change, which avoids surprises when changing directories but makes it hard to look for say a .pdf file across multiple folders. Could we actually have the 2 options: sticky filter or one that is reset after some time or when changing dirs? I think there really are the 2 user cases.

Beside allowing some regular expressions the filter in 4.8 works mainly like in 4.7. If I remember correctly we got several requests for turning off the filter on a directory change but (until now) no request to have a toggle/option to leave it turned on between directories. I'd only add an option if I've the impression that there is really a need for this (E.g. having something like 30 % of the target users of Dolphin want behavior A vs. 70 % want behavior B - no option will be added if it is something like 5 % vs 95 %).
