Description Volker Gronau 2008-09-06 20:04:22 UTC
Version: (using Devel)
Compiler: gcc (GCC) 4.1.2 (Gentoo 4.1.2 p1.1)
OS: Linux
Installed from: Compiled sources

Hi, ony my system the taskbar-widget gets in serious trouble, when i opened eclipse (any ganymede version). It starts flickering when mouse over (so i can see the background whaterdrop) sometimes it doesnt redraw anything and i can see the blue background-bitmap.
So when i want to search an open application i have to mouseover from left to right, trying to read the names while they appear and disappear. When i minimize Eclipse everything is ok.
I compiled directly from SVN-sources Version 4.2 on AMD 64 Bit.
Ah and the problem remains there constant, when using desktop effects(xrender/opengl) or not(when not the blue bitmap is black, but okay).

If you have any questions, just send an email (i dont know if bugzuilla does that on post simultanisly).

on other systems that you have KDE 4 on, this doesn't happen?

what video card and driver are you using on the system that has this problem?

when you say "it starts flickering" does that mean the taskbar itself, correct? is it possible to get a screenshot or even a screencast of this in action?

the concept that this problem is triggered when a specific window is shown is a hint to me that this may be driver related =/

(and yes, bugzilla does CC people automatically .. =)

Oh it doesn't start flickering with screen-updates (like the 60Hz flimmering). It just starts get messed up.
I have continued searching and it seems only to happen when the Eclipse-Window has the focus. This happens when it is maximized/restored /complete visible or not.
Hm this is the only system i have here with running eclipse and 64bit kde from sources.
If it still helps i have the latest nvidia (not nv) drivers.

(i have seen it ;-))

Ok i have another testing result, it only happens whenn the middle part of Eclipse is on the visible screen (where the sourcecode is typed) AND Eclipse has the focus - really wired.
And the rest of the Screen, even the Panel, where the Taskbar is part of, is okay.
On the Screenshot the Clock looks messed up, but the clock is ok.

I've seen this with OO.o writer as well. So taking a stab, I'd guess it might be java related since other gtk apps like pidgin, gimp, mysql-query-browser, ... aren't affected.

I'm running gentoo(4.1 from testing overlay), I've got the nvidia binary driver, and my jdk is 1.6.0.07.x

Best way I've been able to reproduce is this. Open eclipse. Open a source file of some sort. Start shaking the screen like crazy until something in the panel flickrs. It almost seems like the longer you move things around before minimizing it, the more flakey things get too. I've actually gotten things on my desktop to start acting weird after a while so its not confined to the panel.

I'm experiencing the same problems, i.e. unsteady flicker of the taskbar and plasma widgets while the focus is on eclipse (3.4 with jdk 1.6). There is no flicker (only mssing widgets), when I'm not moving the mouse; it seems to be somehow bound to the focus of the mouse.

I'm using kde 4.1.2 (Ubuntu packages) and the NVidia proprietary driver (169.12 compiled against 2.6.24).

I have also experienced this problem. I agree it has something to do with Java. I am using Java 1.6, OpenSuse with KDE 4.1.2 release 44.4 and have a GeForce 7600 GS with the latest nvidia drivers. I experience this problem with Zend Studio for Eclipse. I only experience this issue when Zend is on the screen. As soon as I minimize the application the flickering stops.
