Description Parameshwara Bhat 2008-08-31 05:26:59 UTC
Version:           2.1.1 (using 4.1.1 (KDE 4.1.0 (4.1 >= 20080722)) "release 40.4", KDE:KDE4:Factory:Desktop / openSUSE_11.0)
Compiler: gcc
OS: Linux (i686) release 2.6.25.11-0.1-default

The present Gwenview as in KDE4 is simply lovable. One option I miss is 'set as wallpaper' option. If this can appear in 'Information' panel, that will be great.

I'd like to see this feature, too. Hopefully it'll be implemented soon.

If you are not satisfied, I can give your money back.

I agree that this is very help to have, Kolourpaint support it (albeit in a crude way)!
Comment 6 Jithin Emmanuel 2009-03-09 04:15:46 UTC
Shouldn't it be more general behavior. It will be better if dolphin can also provide this functionality on the context menu of a image file. Right now wall paper can be changed only through appearance settings.

I remember in kde 3.5 series there was a DCOP command which can be used to change wallpaper through terminal. Is there any such commands in KDE 4. Then it will be easy to write a script or something to change wallpaper easily.

Unfortunately plasma-desktop provides no dbus command right now to set the wallpaper, so it's difficult to add a way to set the wallpaper from within Gwenview. A simple workaround is to drag'n'drop the image over the desktop. Since KDE 4.4, a context menu will open and let you set the dropped image as wallpaper.

@Aurelien: Hi! Do you know if something has evolved on the plasma side???
Comment 11 Holly 2010-08-03 19:46:59 UTC
Hello,
I'm not sure this option is necessary. I mean, I suppose it COULD be useful, but...

Presently, if you click and drag an image from Gwenview onto the desktop, one of the options it gives you is to set it as wallpaper. This seems good enough to me as it works great. You can also do this from other programs, too, I think.
Comment 12 Jithin Emmanuel 2010-08-06 14:29:16 UTC
I dont think its a good user experience that just to set a new wallpaper, I have to open another application and drag the image to desktop.
Having the ability to set the desired wallpaper the user wants should be straight forward.

You can watch bug 217950 to find out when Plasma supports changing the wallpaper.

From duplicate bug 319703:
"Gwenview should have the option to set the current image as wallpaper and to open the wallpaper's settings of the desktop to better set the scale, etc..."

Almost nine years later and this feature is still missing...
Dear devs, give us this useful feature please.

Before implementing something, please open a new task on Gwenview's workboard (https://phabricator.kde.org/project/board/263/) to discuss where to add it best.

Ideas where it could go in random order, needs more thinking:
- Implementation as KIPI plugin (Plugins → Tools)
- Action which can be manually added to the toolbar. ← I probably prefer this.
- Regular menu entry.

The button should not go to:
- The sidebar (too many items already).
- The context menu (not important enough).

Please remember that changing the wallpaper regularly (!) from within Gwenview is probably only used by a small (but vocal) minority of Gwenview's userbase, which should be reflected in its importance in the UI.

THB, I'd prefer it if this was no separate feature, and the official way to use it would be by dropping an image to the desktop. Note in case there is a way to write a script/dbus command to set a wallpaper, users can already add an entry to the "Open With" menu by themselves.

I think we can probably discuss it here rather than on the Phabricator workboard. It's a pretty focused change.

+1 for having it in the main menu, and creating an off-by-default toolbar button for small number of people who reeeeeeeally love this feature enough to want to use Gwenview to manually change their wallpaper all the time.

I'm torn on the subject of a context menu entry. Gwenview's current context menu is really not that large, and context menus are only used by experts anyway. I wouldn't fight for it, but I wouldn't fight against it, either.

+1 for context menu, one line wouldnt kill anybody. Also it would be nice to have it in the overview mode.

> +1 for context menu, one line wouldnt kill anybody.
I disagree, of course this will kill usability. Gwenview should not get a spaceship cockpit like some other image viewers. There are actions which currently are not present in the context menu which are more important than this feature. We would have to add them first, and then the context menu would be too crowded.

In general the context menu has the most important stuff, the rest lives in the regular menu.

> Also it would be nice to have it in the overview mode.
If it was added to the regular menu, you would have it everywhere.

In comment 24 I read: "There are actions which currently are not present in the context menu which are more important than this feature" . Well, why don't you give some examples?
Apart from that, people are asking for this feature is because they expect it there to be. It has nothing to do with how important it is, just other viewers (e.g. Gthumb, XnView do have this item). And furthermore it seems in place... A user is browsing pictures and suddenly thinks: "that would be nice for wallpaper"... It seems only practical that he can right-click and put the image there...
This option is imo very practical when seen from a user perspective.

I'd like to chime in to say that I would definitely like to have this. The most important consideration is that Dolphin *does* have it, shockingly, and Gwenview is much better for browsing images than Dolphin. When looking at changing my wallpaper, I currently do "browse for the right image in Gwenview -> look at the filename -> hunt for the right filename in Dolphin -> right click, set as wallpaper". Being able to do the last step directly in Gwenview would be a significant improvement.
