Version: 0.50.80 (using KDE 4.1.0) Installed from: Debian testing/unstable Packages OS: Linux For second time in this week somebody tells me that do not like kopete appearence and for second time I sggest improvements for having a good look and feel. My suggestion is always disable all message, taskbar and sound notifications and also set these options in ~/.kde4/share/config/kopeterc : [Behavior] autoConnect=true chatWindowGroupPolicy=GroupAll enableEventsWhileAway=false queueUnreadMessages=true trayflashNotify=false useMessageQueue=false [ChatWindowSettings] Tab Placement=0 [ContactList] contactListAutoHideVScroll=false contactListDisplayMode=RightAligned contactListIconMode=IconPhoto contactListTreeView=false groupContactByGroup=false showOfflineUsers=false [Account_MSNProtocol_........(your_account_here)........] DownloadPicture=1 I think kopete default options should be changed
> For second time in this week somebody tells me that do not like kopete appearence and for second time I sggest improvements for having a good look and feel. [...] Well, adding several bug reports for the same issue does not necessarily speed up things. So, which one should be marked as a duplicate? This one or Bug 167144?
Sure, I have been adding information to many bugs and I know duplicate bugs do not help. I didn't thought that were same bug. I am documenting Kopete usability. So that's real bug but before I have a more complete report I sent a couple of bugs on isssues that I consider important so can be solved or rejected faster. When I got a complete report I will send to kopete-devel. Bug 167144 is about reducing the number of available options from 3 to 2 and changing message to be more descriptive. Yes, I mention default option thing but main issue is that queue and stack are mostly the same. Conclussion: This bug is about default appearance of chat window and contact list. The other is about appearence of configuration dialog. For me related but not the same as removing one bug we will lose something so I think is is better to maintain both but comment in 167144 that default options thing is not the purpose of that bug, just that stack and queue are the same for the user. What you think will be ok. If you consider that one of them is not well reported or be limited in it's purpose I will wait for a the report I told you about.
For sure, usablility of Kopete is an important topic. As you can see in Bug 167144, you are not the only one who thinks that there are too many/too confusing options with regards to the message handling. They were added in order to fix Bug 65019 and Bug 108967. Now, it has become more apperent which options are really used and/or useful. Again, I do not agree on your general statement of "Kopete default appearence options are unusable". Obviously, it is a matter of taste, whether you prefer opening of new windows or firing of notifications. For me, a perpetual unsolicited opening of new windows would be unusable. Especially, in case of multiple desktops, it is important for me, that I can keep conversations on one desktop and still get a notification that a new message arrived, even if I currently use a different desktop (see Bug 65019 for a heated debate).

I confirm there are usability problems in kopete. For example (most annoying): 1) there are too many toolbars by default, it really doesn't look nice and is confusing. My propose is to: - move main toolbar stuff, to the status bar, it's confusing to have 3 status related options in 3 different places of UI. Just make a combo box on status bar, so user could click on it and select status in just 2 clicks, instead of 3 or 4 now. 2) search bar could be hidden, and show only on keystroke (now on keystroke kopete actually do search either, but in different way) or activated on ctrl+i (like in dolphin) and "/" key press (like in firefox). 3) Global status message don't offer list of already used statuses. It's like basic feature for some people. 4) no reconnect on disconnect and no disconnect on startup. I hope this will help make Kopete rock even harder ;) Regards

Dear user, unfortunately Kopete is no longer maintained. Please migrate to another solution, e.g. for Jabber a possibility is Kaidan, for Matrix a candidate is NeoChat.
