Description Thorsten Staerk 2008-07-31 19:52:44 UTC
Version: (using Devel)
Installed from: Compiled sources
OS: Linux

In kopete 4, I can no longer find "irc" in the list of account types. With 3.5, I could. To reproduce:
Settings -> Configure -> Accounts -> Add Account
Comment 1 Dennis Nienhüser 2008-07-31 21:09:39 UTC
It's not yet ported. You could volunteer ;-)

This is a regression bug. I - as a user - was happy to get KDE 4. As a user, you expect KDE 4 to be better than KDE 3. If functionality is missing, we call this a regression bug. And I cannot see why this is "resolved".
Comment 6 Daniel Franke 2008-12-01 20:05:02 UTC
> It's not yet ported.

If somebody unfamiliar with kopete and the IRC protocol, but a good programming background, would attempt to port it, what would be your estimate be, how long would this take? A matter of hours, days, weeks, months ...?
Comment 7 Thorsten Staerk 2008-12-01 23:04:46 UTC
Daniel,

I cannot give an estimation, but see
http://techbase.kde.org/Development/Tutorials/KDE4_Porting_Guide
Comment 8 Matt Rogers 2008-12-01 23:43:59 UTC
there is already a branch in svn for this:

svn://anonsvn.kde.org/home/kde/branches/work/kopete/new_irc

If you're interested in helping, please email kopete-devel and i'm sure the person working on it can give you more information.
Comment 9 Alexander Dupuy 2008-12-30 00:02:23 UTC
If/when the IRC plugin is ported to the KDE 4 platform, there are several bugs associated with it that should be reopened and addressed:

Bug 83398: Show events should disable all internal messages
Bug 112282: IRC plugin shows lots of unwanted messages
Bug 114305: IRC Numeric code 671 noisies up channel window

The first one was explicitly closed as invalid due to lack of IRC plugin in KDE4, the other two are simple fixes to the KDE3 plugin that were never made, but which would be trivial to add once a KDE4 port exists.

Kopete is now in version 0.70.4 and still no IRC plugin. Will it ever be ported?
Comment 17 Detlev Casanova 2009-06-04 09:07:24 UTC
That should be done for kde 4.4

Debian bug 531064
Comment 19 H.H. 2009-09-19 20:49:42 UTC
it is really annoying having to start konversation everytime for irc, and having a completly different user-interface.
Comment 20 H.H. 2009-10-04 16:36:15 UTC
I have started an irc-plugin for kopete from scratch. It will have basic functionality (no file transfer/..). I'll try to reuse some GUI widgets from existing irc-plugin.

There seems to be at least one regression in kopete: the chat-members-list can't be sorted, and is not sorted by online-status "weight"/alphabetically. Someone else willing to fix that?
Comment 21 H.H. 2009-10-14 00:37:33 UTC
not perfect but usable for basic things:

Comment 22 Thorsten Staerk 2009-10-14 08:33:12 UTC
In clear words: It worked for KDE 3. It does not work for KDE 4. It is a regression.

Is this branch svn://anonsvn.kde.org/home/kde/branches/work/kopete/new_irc for using?
Comment 25 Andrew Bird 2010-02-28 14:28:56 UTC
Hi I just updated my fedora 12 and it includes KDE 4.4.0, but I don't see the IRC plugin in kopete. I was suggested in comment #17 that the plugin would be back in 4.4, has its addition been delayed?
Comment 26 Igor Poboiko 2010-06-11 18:58:17 UTC
Will this bug ever fixed? KDE SC 4.5 is coming, and no activity here..
Comment 27 Dotan Cohen 2010-06-11 20:49:33 UTC
> Will this bug ever fixed?

No, Igor. Nobody is working on this.

I see there 2 implementation:
http://www.kde-apps.org/content/show.php?content=113720
svn://anonsvn.kde.org/home/kde/branches/work/kopete/new_irc

If one of these works, what about move it to trunk? Or it is totally useless?
Comment 30 Mark 2011-03-12 19:23:20 UTC
also big +1 for adding the irc support. now on kde 4.6.

Has anyone managed to build the new_irc from svn?
kopete-plugin-irc solution would need porting to up-to-date release of libircclient-qt (now 0.5, last working is 0.3.2)

I would be very happy in this issue got some solution already.
Regards marek
Comment 31 Pali Rohár 2011-03-12 20:02:26 UTC
In my PPA for Ubuntu I have builded Kopete with this IRC plugin.

Comment 32 Janek Bevendorff 2011-12-25 12:41:45 UTC
It would be great to have some progress on this. The first KDE 4.0 testing release came in 2006 and now the year 2011 is almost over.
I tried Pidgin instead of Kopete, but it doesn't integrate well and it also has some problems with newer versions of some protocols.
However, it is an awful experience to use three instant messaging clients at once (Kopete, Skype as Kopete-Skype backend and Konversation for IRC). Two are already too many, so please release an IRC plugin for Kopete. I know, you can't do anything about Skype as it's closed source software, but you can do something about the IRC issue. Does none of the KDE developers use IRC or are they all satisfied with having multiple instant messengers?

I can't request you to do anything because this is a free open source project and you do all this in your spare time, but I can beg you for a Kopete IRC plugin. Please make Kopete capable of speaking IRC again! :-)
Comment 33 Christoph Cullmann 2024-09-18 18:28:27 UTC
Dear user, unfortunately Kopete is no longer maintained.

Please migrate to another solution, e.g. for Jabber a possibility is Kaidan, for Matrix a candidate is NeoChat.
