Description m.wege 2008-07-24 19:42:49 UTC
Version: (using KDE 4.0.98)
Installed from: Ubuntu Packages

The last days I was exploring KDE 4.1 RC1 a little and now I am considering to make the switch even though the desktop is not really satisfying yet. What seems a problem for me and I guess others also: How can I move my settings and far more important application data into KDE4? I tried it with Kopete. I just copied all the stuff obviously relating to Kopete into the KDE4 folder. Unfortunately it did not work, all the accounts were lost. Please do not assign this as a bug to Kopete, because I guess this is a general problem. It is not obvious which files are to copied, which not and which may cause problems.
So my wish is to have a wizard for transferring application data/settings to KDE4.1 or at least a website explaining which folders can/should (not) be copied in order to get an application running.

this is an ubuntu specific problem (~/.kde vs ~/.kde4). please report it there.

Actually it's in SUSE too, but regardless, there should be a KDE-provided wizard for distros to include for the import process. Users don't need to know or care that their data is in different places, they need to have an easy way to switch if the distro allows them to run both versions of KDE on the same system by putting their settings in different places.

No longer relevant due to age.

By the way, I agree strongly with the idea here, and hopefully configurations become more clear over time.
