Description AhmedG 2008-07-23 07:41:21 UTC
Version: (using Devel)
Installed from: Compiled sources
Compiler: Fedora rawhide kde4
OS: Linux

The loaded plugins don't seem to have an affect but in this case I have flashplugins loaded.

Trying to access any webpages fails this is confirmed on both fedora rawhide kde pacakges as well as archlinux kde-mod-unstable packages.

A screenshot of this issue is available here: http://forums.fedoraforum.org/forum/showthread.php?t=194575

when I run this from konsole I get the following errors upon trying to access a webpage.

sorry for the typos it's kind of late here. I meant konqueror cannot connect to any website.

Title: "Error: Connection to Server Refused - http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/FWN"

Is the connection refused for all websites ? looks really specific to Fedora (or there would have much more bug reports about this)

Comment 3 AhmedG 2008-07-24 03:39:15 UTC
yes this is for all websites including kde.org. I tried this on arch linux's kdemod on my desktop (fedora is on my laptop) and I got similar errors. Firefox works properly. Perhaps it has to do with my router setup. Akregator doesn't work as well but kopete does work. I do believe that ipv6 module is blacklist on both my computers would this have an affect?

One more thing, I am having my friend who uses fedora also test this to see if he has similar problems I will respond with his results as soon as I get them. Is there anything else that would be useful that I am leaving out or is there any other information that I could get to you that would help you track down what this might be? Is solid potentially involved?

clarification: when I say kde-mod for archlinux I mean the kde4 builds for their kde-mod. All this has to do with kde4.

This is not Fedora-specific. I'm running openSuSE 10.3 and get the same message. I've been running the KDE 4.x series since the official release of 4.0 (always from openSuSE RPMs) and have noticed this problem - but only at certain sites. I waited for the official 4.1 release to see if this would correct itself. It hasn't. For instance, what brought me here was the current situation:

I went to google.com. That worked. I went to igoogle and that worked. I went to google mail and that worked. I then tried another site (moodgarden.org) and got the error message, even with multiple refreshes. Then I tried a site from which I've always gotten this error page since I started the 4.x series (whirled.com) and, as I suspected would happen, got the error message. I tried homestarrunner.com and got the message again. I then tried bugs.kde.org and got the same message. I was able to go to yahoo webmail after that. I could go to moodgarden.org successfully after that.

According to the proxy settings, I connect to the internet directly - as it is in my 3.5.9 konqueror, which works. I doubt cache would have anything to do with it, but it's set to keep cache in sync. According to connection preferences, passive mode is enabled and mark partially uploaded files is enabled. I'm not sure what service discovery is, but mine is empty.

I am running 4.1 with no firewall beyond what's on my router, but all ports are opened to this computer.

I might also add that changing browser identification doesn't help, for what it's worth.

In fact, this *might* not be a konqueror thing. I downloaded and built the eureka browser from kde-app.org. Here's what happens when I try to load a web page: it puts up a "loading" dialog, waits a few minutes, closes that one and opens another one, waits a few minutes and then the program crashes. That could simply be a bug in eureka, but I thought it was interesting.

I have found that when this problem happens, if I killall kio_http, there's a chance that it will start working again. It still happens often, at which point I killall kio_http again and it works most of the time. I'm not at home at the moment, so I can't look to see if there is some rc file for kio slaves, but if I find something there, I will post it here later.
Comment 9 AhmedG 2008-08-09 18:36:29 UTC
uhh I don't even have kio_http working. However when I go to school and use the school's wireless connection Konqueror works, at home however konqueror does not work.
Comment 10 Constantinos Maltezos 2008-08-14 06:35:34 UTC
Final update from me: after two days of using Konqueror following an update from the opensuse repositories, I can safely say that I no longer experience this problem. I can't speak for others.
Comment 11 AhmedG 2008-08-14 18:47:51 UTC
Constantinos, could you post your Konqueror and KDE versions? Mine is

Version 4.1.00 (KDE 4.0.99 (4.1 RC1+))
Using KDE 4.1.00 (KDE 4.0.99 (4.1 RC1+))

also it seems this behavior is not exclusive to just Konqueror and affects kmail, yet kopete is unaffected. That is to say kopete can successfully communicate across the internet while kmail, konqueror, and akregator do not. What ever back end is used for these three would probably be responsible though I admit I do not know much about these services. One more thing I am not sure if I have menitioned before is that it seems this is specific to certain network connections. For example in my University I am able to use konqueror and kmail without a problem. Yet at my home wireless connection I cannot use konqueror. Very odd. I am not sure what I should look at as I am not familar with network things. Perhaps if there is any information I should look at and report it might be helpful if someone could point me in the right direction I would be happy to post the neccessary information.

Thank you,
AhmedG.

Version 4.1.00 (KDE 4.0.99 (4.1 RC1+))
Using KDE 4.1.00 (KDE 4.0.99 (4.1 RC1+))

Why are you still using a Release Candidate ? Update your KDE version to at least 4.1.
Comment 13 Constantinos Maltezos 2008-08-14 21:06:46 UTC
For what it's worth, I was still having problems when I installed the opensuse packages of the official 4.1 release. My current version from the update is:

Version 4.1.61 (KDE 4.1.61 (KDE 4.2 >= 20080807)) "release 1.5"
Comment 14 AhmedG 2008-08-15 03:32:07 UTC
Well on Arch linux I do have kde 4.1 proper and the same issues occur.
I ran across this thread that says that if you find out what the ip address of the website is and paste that in it will work. I tested this and in fact it is true thus pointing to a DNS nameserver issue perhaps. However this particular user tracked down the issue to glibc. I am not sure if this is a gentoo specific fix or not. Can anyone elaborate???

I am now on Kubuntu running their kde4.1 and konqueror, kmail and the rest are all running just fine. Perhaps they have a fix?
Comment 16 Christophe Marin 2008-08-17 00:34:27 UTC
Since there's only a few reports like this one, I think it was a local problem.

Closing this bug since everything is working for you now.
