Closing as invalid, this isn't a problem with printer-applet but with pykde or something its interacting with. You can report pykde issues to http://www.riverbankcomputing.com/mailman/listinfo/pyqt
Comment 2 Laurent Montel 2009-01-20 11:33:52 UTC
Hi,
I have this error yet.
It crashs.
I use sip-4.7.9 and PyQt-x11-gpl-4.4.4

What is the supported version ? :)
Because it can't work.

Regards

This test application works fine.

But printer-applet crash:
ASSERT failure in QDBusConnection::registerObject: "Invalid object path given", file qdbusconnection.cpp, line 680

Comment 5 Jonathan Riddell 2009-01-20 12:12:24 UTC
sip 4.7.9-1 and pyqt 4.4.4 work here on Kubuntu.

Do you have the Gnome system-config-printer and hal-cups-utils installed and
working?

Does the test app attached above work? You should be able to call it with

sudo qdbus --system com.redhat.NewPrinterNotification
/com/redhat/NewPrinterNotification com.redhat.NewPrinterNotification.GetReady

Does is help to run the app with "--style plastique" (this would stop Oxygen
style loading QtDbus)
Comment 6 Jonathan Riddell 2009-01-20 12:14:00 UTC
Do you have /etc/dbus-1/system.d/newprinternotification.conf ?
Comment 7 Laurent Montel 2009-01-20 12:24:24 UTC
Yes I have /etc/dbus-1/system.d/newprinternotification.conf

When I try :
sudo /home/laurent/kde/kde4/qt-copy/bin/qdbus --system com.redhat.NewPrinterNotification /com/redhat/NewPrinterNotification com.redhat.NewPrinterNotification.GetReady

laurent@krita:~$

no result. Don't know what I must have.

I have system-config-printer and hal-cups-utils

How do you start it ? (not sure that it runs)

Same problem here on gentoo linux using the Kde-4.3-beta.
The program printer-applet simply crashes on startup.

Application that crashed: printer-applet
Version of the application: 1.3
KDE Version: 4.2.91 (KDE 4.2.91 (KDE 4.3 >= 20090609))
Qt Version: 4.5.2
Operating System: Linux 2.6.30-2k9 x86_64

What I was doing when the application crashed:
-> I was just starting KDE.

Comment 11 andrew 2009-07-12 07:02:24 UTC
what should newprinternotification.conf look like? (I am edxperiencing this crash also and am missing this file. The test program in this thread fails with a report of:

dbus.exceptions.DBusException: org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.AccessDenied: Connection ":1.362" is not allowed to own the service "com.redhat.NewPrinterNotification" due to security policies in the configuration file
Comment 12 andrew 2009-07-12 07:35:37 UTC
More info on my case K Desktop Environment
Version 4.2.96 (KDE 4.2.96 (KDE 4.3 RC2)) (KDEmod)
Copied newprinternotification.conf from https://fedorahosted.org/system-config-printer/browser/newprinternotification.conf
Can now run the test program provided. Subsequently running the command given above fails:

sudo qdbus --system com.redhat.NewPrinterNotification/com/redhat/NewPrinterNotification/com.redhat.NewPrinterNotification.GetReady
Service 'com.redhat.NewPrinterNotification/com/redhat/NewPrinterNotification/com.redhat.NewPrinterNotification.GetReady' is not a valid name.

This bug seems to have been solved at least in the context of the Arch / chakra distribution (http://chakra-project.org/bbs/viewtopic.php?id=1059). It seems to have primarily been a build issue there... and a permissions one.
Comment 20 Dario Andres 2009-09-07 15:29:39 UTC
@andrew: it looks like a different issue. Thanks anyways

@Heart: your crash is different and it is reported at bug 209095 (seems to be caused by an OpenSuSE upgrade). Thanks

Non-functional here, too.

If you google for this issue, apparently this is happening a *lot*.

Thanks for your advice Jon. Actually I handled this issue.

This is probably one of those instances where, rather than pointing the finger to someone else, *working with* all sides would be more beneficial. This reflects poorly on the /user-facing/ interface, regardless of where the underlying bug exists.
Comment 34 Christoph Feck 2013-09-20 00:41:27 UTC
"Printer Applet" is no longer maintained and has been replaced with "Print Manager" since KDE 4.10.

If this issue still needs to be addressed in KDE 4.10 or newer, please add a comment, or report it for "Print Manager".
